ZEUS & the Grid Rainer Mankel (DESY Hamburg) for the ZEUS grid group DESY Grid User Meeting, 7-May-2004
Grid Users’ Meeting • An excellent idea • implies there are use cases • implies there is something to be used • a major step towards an established service R. Mankel, ZEUS & the Grid
HERA grid presentation • Max Vorobiev & Sanjay Padhi will give a joint seminar about HERA grid activities on Mo 17-May 16:00 SR3 • see this seminar for more details about achievements in H1 & ZEUS R. Mankel, ZEUS & the Grid
Motivation • HERA-II programme leads to a sizable increase in MC simulation demand • increased luminosity • increased event complexity (MVD, STT, ...) • distributed computing shifts worldwide to grid technology • Update of ZEUS computing strategy in fall 2003 identified enabling MC production for the grid as a major goal • Long term: grid analysis? R. Mankel, ZEUS & the Grid
Main mid-term goals • Establish operation of ZEUS simulation suite in grid environment (LCG2) • Establish interoperation with external grid sites • Add steering for production mode • Establish data flow for persistent & transient data • Start production R. Mankel, ZEUS & the Grid
Issues • Need to gain new resources through grid • Need to keep existing resources • almost 300 M events/year (funnel) • User should not have to worry where his jobs runs • need transparent production system R. Mankel, ZEUS & the Grid

Internal structure of experiment (ZEUS) grid? • It is important to specify the role of Core versus site-specific components R. Mankel, ZEUS & the Grid

Job Description lang. RLS SSH RC UI RB USER OUTPUT BDII Certs. $HOME/.globus/ What will core services at DESY look like? • Common RB etc for H1 grid, ZEUS grid and others (LHC? D-Grid?) • attractive if technically feasible • need production quality • Such a core facility should be run by DESY-IT • Responsibility for site-specific computing at DESY (CE/WN/SE)? • multi-VO common farm ? Integrated Multi-VO Core services (H1, ZEUS, ...?) R. Mankel, ZEUS & the Grid
What we will need from DESY-IT • Infrastructure for maintaining virtual organizations (e.g. ZEUS) • very important: reliable dissemination of VOs to all the other grid sites • membership will be maintained by ZEUS R. Mankel, ZEUS & the Grid
What we will need from DESY-IT (cont’d) • Operation of a suitable grid core service RB, RC, BDII, UI (presently LCG2) • production level. Uninterrupted by development studies • will require separate production & development systems R. Mankel, ZEUS & the Grid
What we will need from DESY-IT (cont’d) • Active representation of experiment’s issues in relevant bodies • D-Grid / GermanGrid, LCG, ... CAs • It would be desirable to have also a central DESY-based computing site (SE/CE/WN) of non-negligible size • multiple-VO common farm? R. Mankel, ZEUS & the Grid
Visit of M. Lamanna • Massimo Lamanna will be here next Monday/Tuesday for a presentation in the Computing Seminar (Mo 16:00, SR3) • please attend the seminar R. Mankel, ZEUS & the Grid
