  4. STATISTIC ON AFRICAN AMERICAN MALES • National Stats • 55% do not graduate* • 44%/84% - IL graduates* • 40 point deficit between White males • 2.21%/29% homicide rate • Chicago Public Schools • 35% CPS graduation rate • 44.9%/63.6% college readiness *Schott Education Index

  5. EMPOWER TO ACHIEVE • What is your definition of EMPOWER? • What does it mean to ACHIEVE? • Are there boundaries to achievement?

  6. EMPOWER TO ACHIEVE Kenwood Academy Brotherhood • Began with one senior mentoring 3 freshmen males in October, 2003 • Ten seniors Peer Mentoring 25 freshmen • Established January 9, 2004 • 100% Graduation rate for ACTIVE participants

STEP ONE • DATA COLLECTION (Before) • Can I be committed to this project? • Is there a need? • Check the district achievement data • Check the schools performance data • Check the Disciplinarian records for trends • Ask the students: • Would they participate in a program? • How should it be created? • Who would benefit from this program? • Are they interested in coordinating the program?

  9. Step Two • Who shares my PASSION and can be a resource to me and the group? • Community Agency volunteers • Colleges/Universities • Fraternities/Sororities • Business people for employment • Sports personalities/Coaches • Educators • Ministers • Parents

  11. Step Three • Create a Mission/Purpose • It provides structure for the organization • Identifies weakness of target group to develop solutions • Create objectives • Create goals

  12. BROTHERHOOD PURPOSE The purpose of the Kenwood Academy Brotherhood is to train the males to become leaders for themselves, their families, their communities, and school, while improving the graduation rate.

  13. Step Four • Create a Code of Honor/Creed • Guideline for the mission/purpose • Badge of honor created by a collaboration between students and adult • Identifies what the group is about • Creative to attract members

The Creed of Excellence • FRATERNITY – We are a group of young men with one common cause – the empowerment of each other. • RESPONSIBILITY – We are responsible for our own actions and we strive to help each other. • CREATIVITY – We will use our brains to be creative as we move towards academic excellence.

  15. Step Five • Recruiting Members • Who are you trying to recruit? • Student Engagement • MUST be CREATIVE! Recruiting flyer-2Brotherhood brochure • Introduction meeting to explain the mission/purpose • Decide is it annual/monthly/closed/open • Voluntary/referrals-recommendations

  17. Lessons • A lesson plan should be created for each topic Sample Lesson Plan • A student friendly lesson plan should be created too! • An evaluation determines the success or failure of reaching the objective. MAKE IT INTERESTING!
