Strength of outer cover We measured gravitational sag of Carbon-Carbon half cylinder in a cantilever style to confirm the strength of outer cover. Its size is R=75mm, t=0.3mm , L=300mm and its strength is assumed to be E=45GPa.

We measured gravitational sag of Aluminum full or half cylinder in a cantilever styleto confirm the strength of outer cover. Its size is R=75mm, t=0.5mm , L=500mm and its strength is assumed to be E=70GPa.
We decided to adopt two half cylinders for the outer cover. • We are now confirming the strength of SVD structure using FEM. • Material and thickness? Beryllium has large thermal expansion coefficient and is very fragile. Carbon-Carbon may be more fragile than CFRP. If CFRP has no problems, we will adopt 0.5mm thick CFRP. • Radiation length ? 0.5mm thick CFRP( = 0.2%X) is much smaller X than 0.9mm thick Si (= 1.0%X). ( 0.3mm thick C-C = 0.1%X and 0.3mm thick Be = 0.1%X ) • Expansion by absorbing water (humidity) ? Under study but used in CLEO SVX. • CFRP will take a month by Japanese Co. or by Krakow. Carbon-Carbon will take two months by Krakow. We will place an order after design of outer cover is finalized(mid. Nov.?).
