  1. Electricity Vocabulary

  2. The smallest component of matter. Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. Atom

  3. Electrons: particles of an atom that hold a negative charge. They orbit the nucleus. Neutrons: Part of the atom that has no charge. It is found in the nucleus of the atom. Protons: Part of the atom with a positive charge. Found in the nucleus of the atom.

  4. A form of energy caused by the movement of electrons. Energy Electricity • The ability to do work.

  5. Attract: when oppositely charged materials come together Repel: a force that pushes one object away from another

  6. static electricity: an electrical charge that builds up on an object electro-static charge : the static electricity in any object

  7. Volt – a unit that tells how much energy each electron uses Current electricity – electrical power caused by the flow of electrons

  8. Battery – a unit made of two or more cells that is used to store electricity Circuit – the circular path along which energy flows

  9. Closed Circuit – is a complete circuit that allows the electrons to flow continuously from the power source and back. Open Circuit – is a broken circuit where the electrons cannot flow continuously.

  10. Switch – a device that controls the flow of energy through a circuit by completing or breaking the circuit.

  11. Series Circuit: an electrical circuit where the current flows from the power source to an output device and then to another and another etc. and then back to the power source. Parallel Circuit – is a circuit where there is more than one path both to and from the power source and the output devices.

  12. Energy Transformation: the change of energy from one form to another (e.g. from electrical to heat)

  13. Non-renewable Energy Source - a resource that can be used up forever or cannot be regenerated in a reasonable amount of time Renewable Energy Source: a resource that can never be used up or is regenerated in a reasonable amount of time.

  14. generator – a mechanism that turns heat or movement into electrical energy
