Development of a merged PAR satellite product SeaWiFS 2nd GlobColour Users Workshop
PAR: Current approach • Based on one year of input data (2003): • - Extend GlobColour to produce SeaWiFS and MODIS PAR (MERIS implemented in Phase 1) from Level-1. • - Produce individual sensor Level-3 PAR products. • Compare the GlobColour to NASA products to check for consistency. • Compare the two merged (from Level-1b to Level-3 or merged Level-3) PAR products to in situ data sources and check for consistency and accuracy. • Assess the impact on PAR of having one, two or three sensors. 2nd GlobColour Users Workshop

GHRSST Diurnal Variability Working Group (Merchant et al. In Prep) Mean daily max dT/K Mean recip wind Mean Kd(490) Lack of wind is the main driver. However, Kd(490) explains 2.4% of the dSST variance, and the sign is such that high Kd(490) promotes diurnal warming. 2nd GlobColour Users Workshop

Summary . 2nd GlobColour Users Workshop • Products can be split into two categories: • Require processing from Level-1/Level-2 or a combination of sources e.g. PAR and primary production (SST and ocean colour) • Can be easily calculated from existing GlobColour products by applying algorithms/models to existing products • The users could calculate the 2nd set on their own, but is that the best way? Yes, for those able to cope with downloading and processing. An alternative is to develop a GRID approach so that the users do the processing, but using remote resources and a user friendly front end. • What do users want? A coastal version of GlobColour? More difficult, but shouldn’t be avoided because the availability of products drives development/usage and hence further research.
