  33. Committees • Purpose – Congress depends on Committees to consider the thousands of bills proposed each session. Help ease the workload of Congress.

  34. Committees • 3 Purposes • 1. Congress divides work among smaller groups • 2. Select bills that receive further consideration • 3. Hold public hearings to help public learn about issues facing the nation.

  37. Standing Committees • Permanent groups that oversee bills that deal with certain issues. • *****Members of the House of Representatives may serve on only 2 Standing Committees.*****

  38. Subcommittees • Group that is a subcategory of Standing committee which specializes in section of Standing committees issue.

  39. Select committees • Temporary committee that studies one specific issue and reports its findings.

  40. Joint committees • Similar to a select committee but includes members of both houses of congress. ***Conference Committee is a type of committee set up when the House and Senate have passed different versions of the same bill.***
