Best practices for implementing Storage Spaces Direct 2019 Carsten Rachfahl (Cloud & Datacenter Management MVP) THR3125
Why thissession? I share the most important Best Practices we found in over 100 Storage Spaces Direct Projects over the last 2 years. And remember: what‘s important in Storage Spaces Direct in Window Server 2016 is also important in Window Server 2019!
#1: RDMA Use RDMA! iWarp or RoCE it doesn't matter! RoCE Configure RoCE correctly on Host Configure RoCE correctly on Switch Don't route RoCE traffic – stay in Switch iWarp Don’t route iWarp traffic - stay in Switch With High Bandwidth Consider PFC
#2: Network Best Practice Switch Embedded Teaming with separate NICs Benefit from new Switch Features (e.g. vRSS, vRDMA, DVMMQ, RSC) Separate NICs and Subnets for SMB Direct traffic Clear Network Design No Congestion at Switch Trunks Possibility to use separate Switches for RDMA Traffic East-West Bandwidth matters Use 25Gbit (or more) instead of 10 Gbit
#3: Resiliency Best Practices 3way Mirror If you need speed Mirror accelerated Parity Still fast Good compromise if you need capacity Great with deduplication Double Parity Not recommended instead use mirror accelerated Parity 2way Mirror Only use in 2 Node Storage Spaces Direct Cluster
#4: Storage Devices Use Flash Devices with enough Endurance Cache Device 3 DWPD Capacity Device 1 – 3 DWPD Caching Devices Minimum 2 Caching Devices Look at 4k Radom IO Numbers Choose NVMes whenever possible NVMe are only ~30% more expensive than comparable SSDs NVMes are easy ~300% faster than comparable SSDs
#5: Sizing Best Practices Parallel Rebuild Calculate at least one HDD for Rebuild Size the different „Storage Tiers“ right 10% Caching Devices (based on the Capacity Devices) 20% Performance Tier (if Mirror accelerated Parity is used) Use Storage Spaces Direct Calculator for rough estimate Link: https://aka.ms/s2dcalc
#6: Buy WSSD Solutions Buy end-to-end tested OEM Solutions Tolearnmore about WSSD come to my Session tomorrow here at 5:40pm
#7: Manage with Windows Admin Center Build for Storage Spaces Direct
