  1. Bellwork  • Grab the notes from the back • Answer the following question in your notebook: • Of the key events of WW2 we discussed last week, which one do you think is the most significant and why?

  2. Special Fighting Forces World War 2 

  3. Today's Standard  • US. 41 – Identify the roles and sacrifices of individual American soldiers as well as the unique contributions of special fighting forces such as the Tuskegee Airmen, the 44nd Regimental Combat Team, the 101st Airborne, and the Navajo Code Talkers 

  4. Today's Objective  • Students will be able to explain the four different examples of special fighting forces in their own words. 

  5. African Americans - WW2 • Over One million African Americans served during WW2 • First time as officers and pilots  • Tuskegee Airmen  • First African American servicemen to serve as aviators in the military  • They trained at Tuskegee Institute (remember, that was founded by Booker T. Washington)

  6. Japanese Americans - WW2 • Many Japanese American soldiers were allowed to serve overseas, but only in Europe • 442nd Regimental Combat Team • Composed entirely of Americans of Japanese ancestry (some from Hawaii, some from Internment camps)  • Took part in 8 major campaigns in Europe • One of the first Allied forces to participate in the liberation of Nazi concentration camp Dachau  • Most decorated Unit of its size in US history - more than 18,000 awards 

  7. Native Americans – WW2  • Almost a quarter million Native Americans served • Navajo Code Talkers • Part of the US Marine Corps • Their language = undecipherable by Japanese  • Navajo is only spoken, and not many know how to speak it • Code words for planes - names of birds to represent different planes • Also an alphabet to write codes in based on their language 

  8. 101st Airborne - "Screaming Eagles" • Established in 1942, parachuted into Normandy on D-Day (June 6, 1944) at Utah Beach  • Participated in Battle of the Bulge (December 1944) - they were surrounded in Bastogne (critical transportation hub) by German troops, but they were able to hold out until support arrived (Battle of the Bulge)  • From there → Alsace → Rhineland → Bavarian Alps  • Today - Fort Campbell
