Immigrants Arrive in America • 2 ports of entry into the U.S. • Ellis Island- New York City • Angel Island- San Francisco Bay • To Enter: Immigrants had to be healthy, show they had money, a skill, or a sponsor to provide for them. • Had to take health tests…if they didn’t pass they could be sent back

  6. Ellis Island was built in 1892 as the 1st “Immigration Center” Later, closed in the 1940s Today it is a museum.

  7. Angel Island • Most Chinese and Asian immigrants came through here (San Francisco Bay)

  8. Some Immigrants Assimilate Into Society • Assimilate: to fit in. • Most immigrants lived in ethnic neighborhoods • Americanization: helping newcomers learn American ways. (Language, customs, dress, and diet) • Immigrants usually stuck with their native cultures but children of immigrants were more likely to adopt American ways. • America became known as the “Melting Pot”

Chinese Exclusion Act • Law passed in response to discrimination against the Chinesein 1882 • Prohibited immigration by Chinese laborers, limited civil rights of immigrants in America • Chinese were viewed as taking away jobs from Nativists • First law to restrict immigration. • Overturned in 1943

  11. Gentlemen’s Agreement1907– Japan said they would restrict immigration to the U.S. IF the U.S. would treat Japanese immigrants already in America better

  12. Immigrants Change America • Immigrants changed America in many ways. (Write 2) • Fueled industrial growth • Helped elect politicians • Made their traditions a part of American culture. Write 2 examples: • Mexican Americans developed ranching techniques. • Chinese, Irish, and Mexican workers built railroads. • Immigrants worked in mines, steel and textile mills, and factories. • Female immigrants worked in factories, as seamstresses, and laundresses • Immigrants helped the U.S. become a world power!
