  2. Constraint (n) • Something that restricts thought or action • Constrain (v) • Example: Cost is often a constraint in considering petroleum alternatives.

  3. Contamination (n) • Being made less clean by a germ or a hazardous substance • Contaminate (v); contaminant (n) • Example: The Exxon Valdez oil spill contaminated the water around Alaska.

  4. Deplete (v) • To greatly decrease the supply of a resource or material • Depletion (n) • Example: We must be careful not to deplete our natural resources.

  5. Dispose of (v) • To throw away; to get rid of; to kill • Disposal (n); disposable (adj) • Example: The factories were required to dispose of their waster properly.

  6. Elementally (adv) • In terms of elements; basically • Element (n); elemental (adj) • Example: In chemistry, you study the different elements.

  7. Emission (n) • Sending out from a small space into the general environment; a substance discharged into the air • Emit (v) • Emission is usually followed by an “of” phrase • Example: Factories must cut back on their emissions of pollutants.

  8. Extinction (n) • Complete disappearance; the end of existence • Extinct (adj) • Example: Dinosaurs have been extinct for millions of years.

  9. Reservoir (n) • A place where liquid is collected and stored • Reserve (v) • Example: The reservoir had become polluted by the chemical spill.

  10. Shrink (v) • To become reduced in size, amount, or value • Shrinkage (n); shrinkable (adj) • Example: The population of pandas has shrunk in the last 100 years.

  11. Stable (adj) • Firm and dependable; showing little change • Stability (n); stably (adv) • Example: The earth’s temperature has never been stable.
