Some interesting facts about applications... 2012 • Just 2.6% drop in 18 year olds ( as opposed to 11% drop in mature students) • International applications up by 10.5% – 53,252 in total 2011 • Over 83,000 second-time applicants • More than 4,000 applicants received no offers from any of their five choices

2013 Apply • It went live on Tuesday 12 June • It is anticipated that over 100,000 applicants will register by third week in July 2012
Minimal changes for 2012/13 • Applicant fee rising to £23 and £12 • Additional options listed for activities in preparation for HE • New info page on student finance for EU and international students (area of permanent residence outside UK) • Staff Apply warning message if no qualifications are entered

UCAS Progress - Introduction • Planned to be a ‘one-stop’ index of education and training opportunities • Developed in conjunction with 11-16 and 11-18 schools and academies, colleges and work-based learning providers, as well as local authorities • 88 Local Authority areas involved (England & Wales)
Features and benefits • Single online course directory – no LA boundaries • Supports initiatives like Raising Participation Age (RPA) and September Guarantee • Designed to provide information and support to young people through the key stages from the age of 13
Our vision • To be the hub of impartial information encouraging and supporting young people to progress • Resources and information for young people, parents, teachers and advisers • Rich use of supporting material: manuals, lessons plans, video and brochures
What’s happening in 2012? February – April April – May June Consultation with all stakeholders Analysis & reporting UCAS Board Online responses Events Final recommendations for new QI system In June 2012, the QIR team will present the final version of the proposed model to the UCAS board, supported by feedback gained during the consultation. If the board approves the recommendations then it is anticipated that initial QIPs would be available by September 2013 and that existing Tariffed qualifications would also be given an SDS rating by this date.
Consultation and applicant survey responses • 454 consultation responses were received across a broad cross section of the sector • 11,164 survey responses were also received from current year applicants about the APR proposals • Institutions have discussed the issues thoroughly and at the highest level before responding Consultation responses by source Source: UCAS Response Analysis The responses were detailed and showed great insight
Challenges raised about post-results applications • Compression of key activities - exams, marking and HEI decision making • Loss of teaching time • Lack of time for HEI and applicant relationship building • Loss of motivational effect of offers • Lack of school support over the summer • Insufficient time to prepare for entering HE • UCAS is not recommending a move to post-results applications
Proposals that received strong support • myUCAS web portal • More mandatory fields and data validation • Uploading documents, including portfolios • Extend the ABL • Improved terminology • Better guidance for referees • E-forms and paperless processing • Improved facility to provide feedback • CI visibility of the CF’s conditions • Improved information capture and data quality • Central data capture for third parties – UKBA, SLC
Proposals that will not be implemented • A post-results admissions model • A reduction in choices • Moving the 15 January equal consideration deadline • Changing the branding of Apply or Extra
Next steps • UCAS will embark on a programme of continuous improvement • Agree and establish a cross-sector governance framework to oversee and guide improvements, including: o Advisory Board o Working Groups
