Historic Timeline 1960-Northcross et al vs. Board of Education, Memphis City Schools was filed to end desegregation 1968-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Killed in Memphis, TN 1969-Black Mondays began 1971-Federal Judge Robert McRae made the ruling to end segregation in Memphis City Schools 1973-Massive busing begins in the city on January 24th 1981-Revisited the desegregation law and rezoned the district-used less buses 2004-Discontinued using busing as a means to desegregation
The Bus Solution • Busing began in Memphis in January, 1973, Memphis did not own one bus prior to the decision-42 buses were purchased for 1.5 million dollars • 38,000 students were bused and spent 31-45 minutes on the bus each way • 5,347 students spent 46-60 minutes on the bus each way • In 2004 less than 3 percent of students were bused

January, 1973 began attending Alcy Elementary • Rode a bus to school • Integrated school • Was the only white cheerleader in Junior High
Memphis today: The current enrollment of 115,461 students includes 101,232 blacks, 4,897 Asians and Hispanics, and 9,239 whites.
