What is Library Mentoring? • A semester course that fosters understanding and utilization of library resources • The second semester offers an opportunity for returning students to help with library services
Layout of Assignments • Students are required to read and fill out three book reviews and one magazine review per semester (nonfiction, fiction, Gateway Book) • Some time is given in class for reading • The course is independent study; however, the librarian must provide support in keeping students on task with their assigned activities and provide support in completing assignments as needed
First quarter assignments • Semester calendar preparation-printed off from Office Outlook • Organization of the Library • Organization of the library practice • Learning how to Use the Online Catalog • Catalog practice • Almanac assignment • Reference assignment- Current Biography/Dictionary of American Biography • Genre Jeopardy • Shelving practice • Shelving Test • Catalog Test- 2 book reviews due
Second Quarter Assignments • Almanac practice using Inspiration software • Online Database Assignment (four parts) - can look up famous person information for biography project Biography Outline Biography Rough Draft Biography Timeline Utilizing Inspiration Biography PowerPoint Biography Final Draft- burn all parts to cd Library Mentoring Final
Duties of Library Mentors • Identification of collections and shelving of materials • Check out to patrons • Labeling shelves • Inventory of section • Clean up of shelves • Running errands- mail/books/overdue notes • Changing paper in printer
More Duties • Watering plants • Turning on channel one • Cleaning computer screens, tables, dusting • Stamping new materials • Applying new cover protectors to books • Scanning pictures for yearbook preservation • Helping other students with computer problems/assignments • Filing- magazines, papers, etc. • Book reviews • Help with Scholastic Book Fair • LIBRARY MENTORING COUNTS FOR TUTORING A+ HOURS
