  1. Applications of Virtual Reality • Military • Predator Drone • Miners / NASA • Distant and Dangerous • Doctors • Antarctica

  2. Motion Tracking HMD Nick Sorenson Adam Thompson

  3. Existing Products • Expensive • Inaccurate • Limited range

  4. LCD Glasses • Two 0.55-inch LCD screens • Creates the effect of viewing a 52-inch screen from 6.5 feet away • 800x225 Pixel resolution • S-Video and RCA connections • AC or Battery powered

  5. Accelerometers An accelerometer is a device for measuring acceleration. An accelerometer inherently measures its own motion. Accelerometers are used along with gyroscopes in inertial guidance systems, as well as in many other scientific and engineering systems. One of the most common uses for micro electro-mechanical system (MEMS) accelerometers is in airbag deployment systems for modern automobiles. In this case the accelerometers are used to detect the rapid deceleration of the vehicle to determine when a collision has occurred and the severity of the collision. From wikipedia.org

  6. Accelerometers • Provide measurement of the acceleration of the user’s head • Analog or PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) output • Can measure 360° by mounting 2 accelerometers perpendicular

  7. Soft Ware Two Paths • Microcontroller • Device Driver

  8. Hardware Components LCD Glasses Microcontroller Accelerometers Radio Controlled Car Wireless Camera Servos Computer Misc. Circuitry (Resistors, Capacitors, Potentiometers, etc.)

  9. WOW • Wireless • Real Device Driver • Pitch and Yaw • Re-Centering • Extra Function Buttons • Range of Motion
