Major applications Magnetic Torquers are used in the field of Spacecraft Attitude Control ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators
Basic working principle Running electric current through a coil produces a magnetic field that is able to react with the magnetic field of the earth. The torque generated is used to control the attitude of the spacecraft. The only alternative in spacecraft attitude control is in mass ejection (rocket thrusters) and momentum wheels. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators
sample configuration ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators
Limitations • torques can only be produced perpendicular to the magnetic field • A magnetic field must be present, thus useless for deeper space travel ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators
Major Specifications Magnetic Dipole Moment (A*m^2) Weight Size Power Consumption Interface ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators
