Solar cells • Photoelectric cells convert light in to electricity. • Sometimes the term solar cell is reserved for devices intended specifically to capture energy from sunlight such as solar panels and solar cells
Solar water heating Heat from the sun is used to heat water in glass panels on the roof
Solar furnaces A solar furnace is a structure used to harness the rays of the sun in order to produce high temperatures, usually for industry. This is achieved using a curved mirror (or an array of mirrors)
Advantages • Solar energy is free and produces no waste or pollution and it is handy for low power uses such as garden lights. Solar energy is a renewable resource. Although we cannot utilize the power of the sun at night or on stormy, cloudy days, etc., we can count on the sun being there the next day, ready to give us more energy and light. As long as we have the sun, we can have solar energy
Disadvantages • Solar power doesn’t work at night and is unreliable in countries with little sun. • Solar cells/panels, etc. can be very expensive.
Renewable Yes it is renewable
