Graphing General Quadratics y = ax 2 + bx + c

Graphing General Quadratics y = ax 2 + bx + c. Objective: the Students will graph general quadratic functions to find. Axis of Symmetry x= -b/2a. Graph the function. Label the vertex and the axis of symmetry. Y = x 2 + 6x + 2 Y = -3x 2 – 2x – 5 Y = 1/3x 2 + 6x – 9.

  1. Graphing General Quadraticsy = ax2 + bx + c Objective: the Students will graph general quadratic functions to find

  2. Axis of Symmetryx= -b/2a • Graph the function. Label the vertex and the axis of symmetry. • Y = x2 + 6x + 2 • Y = -3x2 – 2x – 5 • Y = 1/3x2 + 6x – 9

  3. Find the axis of symmetry and vertex without graphing • y = 2x2 – 8x + 6 • y = 1/2x2 + 8x – 9 • y = -x2 – 10x

  4. Tell Whether the function has a minimum value or a maximum value. Then find the value. • F(x) = x2 – 6 • F(x) = -3x2 + 12x – 20 • F(x) = 1/2x2 – 2x + 5

  5. Fishing spiders can propel themselves across water and leap vertically from the surface of the water. During a vertical jump, the height of the body of the spider can be modeled by the function y = -4500x2 + 820x + 43, where x is the duration (in seconds) of the jump and y is the height (in millimeters) of the spider above the surface of the water. • After how many seconds does the spider’s body reach its maximum height? • What is the maximum height?

  6. The parabolic arches that support the roof of the Dallas Convention Center can be modeled by the graph of the equation y = -0.0019x2 + 0.71x where x and y are measured in feet. What is the height h at the highest point of the arch?
