What is Single Version of TRUTH? Thomas Culpepper The "single version of truth" lies in the ability to dynamically offer the right information to the right person, at the right time. Karthikeyan Sankaran BI systems should strive for a 'consistent common version of data' rather than the 'absolute truth' because 'truth' depends on the frame of reference. Peter Thomas One place to go to run reports and perform analysis (as opposed to several different, un-reconciled, overlapping systems and local spreadsheets / Access DBs)
Does TRUTH mean same to all Stakeholders ? • BI is pervasive • Purpose of BI is to make decisions • Operational, Tactical and Strategic • Quality of data • Latency • Accuracy • Complete Macro micro Does the idea of one version of the truth gloss over the fact that context or point of view are an inherent part of any statement about data, which effectively makes truth relative?
How difficult is to offer Single version of truth? • Rarely, if ever, is the truth in plain sight. • The truth is a moving target. • Getting to one version of the truth is a highly politicized process. -- Julia King

What are the Challenges? • Truth is relative • Truth is on a continuous change • IT is not able to catch up with the business expectations • Data is duplicated, inconsistent, incomplete, and spread in silos across disparate systems, it requires a special technology to recognize (disparate data), resolve (into a single version of the truth), and relate (them to derive some meaning). • By the time we acquire, merge, massage, report, and interpret, the source is speaking something different.
What’s the current solution • The whole truth is best delivered in chunks and disclosed at prescribed times • Master Data Management • Metadata management • In memory analytics • In database analytics Are these solutions good enough to deliver a dynamic, subjective version of relevant truth to all stake holders ?
What should we do? • Define and negotiate a balance between business change and IT Change. • if they are in synch you have achieved the goal • Certify a set of data – reliable for making a certain decision. • Decision driven assurance • Define data quality metrics • Measure at a defined frequency • Compute data quality index (DQI) • Publish the data with DQI Deliver the relative truth that enables effective decision making
