  1. NETW2816 Lecture 2 Network Cabling

  2. Overview • This lecture we will look at: • Cabling of the network. • Coax, UTP etc. • NICS • Wireless

  3. Coaxial Cable This type of cabling is used with: 10Base5 – Thicknet Ethernet. 500m run per cable length. 10Base2 – Thinnet Ethernet. 185m run per cable length. 2

  4. Attenuation Coax suffer less from attenuation than does UTP 3

  5. ThinNet Connection 4

  6. Copper Cable Cores 5

  7. ThickNet vs. ThinNet Core 6

  8. ThickNet Transceiver 7

  9. BNC Connector 8

  10. BNC T Connector 9

  11. BNC Barrel Connector 10

  12. BNC Terminator 11

  13. Twisted-Pair Cables This type of cable used in the following Ethernet networks: 10BaseT – 10 Mbps transmission. 100m cable run. 100BaseT – 100 Mbps transmission. 100 m cable run. *1000BaseT – 1000 Mbps  *must be better than Cat 5. 13

  14. UTP Cable 10BaseT stands for: 10Mbps, Baseband Transmission, Twisted Pair. Baseband transmission uses one frequency that takes up the entire channel, whereas Broadband would use many frequencies over that channel. 14

  15. STP Cable Found primarily in Token Ring Networks. Can be used in Ethernet though. 16

  16. Twisted-Pair Components 18

  17. Fiber-Optic Cable 19

  18. Transmission Types There are three major transmission types found on networks. The default Ethernet transmission type is half-duplex. Simplex Transmission Full Duplex Transmission Half Duplex Transmission 22

  19. Case Study Problem Take a look at the Diagram. Suggest what type of cable would support the required run. Your choices are: Thicknet, Thinnet, UTP. Distances are in meters. 25

  20. Network Interface Card • Role of the Network Interface Card • Convert parallel to serial • Interface between PC and Network • Configuration Options and Settings • IRQ’s can cause issues • Network Performance • An old Slow NIC will affect performance • Specialized NICs • For servers or different topologies 26

  21. Network Interface Card (NIC) 27

  22. Types of NICs 31

  23. Wireless Networking • Wireless Environment • Rapidly expanding • Types of Wireless Networks • Access • Ad hoc 35

  24. Network Access Point Access Point serves as entry point to the wired network. Ad-Hoc wireless networks do not have an access point. 36

  25. Infrared Transmission speeds can be up to 10 Mbps 37

  26. Recap • We looked at: • Cabling of the network. • Coax, UTP etc. • NICS • Wireless • Thank You for your time.
