The Lord’s supper - scripture 1 Cor 11:23-26 – “the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me. In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.’”

But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly.” (Not discriminating" mee diakrinoon) V. 33-34 – the purpose of the memorial was being violated

The Lord’s supper - scripture It is an activity done together by the church It is an activity that “proclaims the Lord’s death” It is done “in remembrance of Me” It is done in a reverent way, distinguishing it from a meal or common event It is to be accompanied by thanks (for the memorial? For the sacrifice? For the elements?)

For what things related to communion are we grateful?

The Lord’s supper - elements The body Col 1:21-22 – “And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach” Heb 10:10 – “By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” 1 Peter 2:24-25 – “and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.” The body is a symbol of redemption from sin through Jesus’ sacrifice

The Lord’s supper - elements The blood Heb 9:19-22 - For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, "THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WHICH GOD COMMANDED YOU." 21 And in the same way he sprinkled both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood. 22 And according to the 1Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Heb. 13:20 – the blood of the eternal covenant; Heb. 8:7-13
