  1. Recent developments in 3GPP 3GPP2 OP meeting24 July 2000Beijing • Adrian Scrase, ETSI

  2. Contents • 1 Changes to 3GPP Scope • 2 Creation of a new TSG • 3 New Market Representation Partners • 4 New 3G Authentication Algorithm • 5 Open publication of Ciphering & Integrity Algorithms • 6 Creation of 3GPP IPR Register • 7 External relations 8 And finally….

  3. Changes to 3GPP scope (1) 3GPP scope has been modified and now includes: “the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) including GSM evolved radio access technologies (e.g. General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE)).”

  4. Changes to 3GPP scope (2) Editorial modification to confirm that the Chinese regional variant known as TD SCDMA will be developed in 3GPP: “UTRAN (including UTRA; W-CDMA in Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) mode and TD-CDMA in Time Division Duplex (TDD) modes);”

  5. Changes to 3GPP scope (3) Modifications to remove references to “initial phase” and “first phase” placing long term evolution of the systems within the Project: “3GPP shall consider the long term evolution”

  6. Creation of a new TSG New TSG created actively supported by ETSI and T1 TSG GERAN (GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network) Niels Peter Skov Andersen (Motorola) appointed as Convenor (TD SCDMA will continue to be developed in the existing TSG RAN (Radio Access Network)

  7. New Market Representation Partners (1) Two new MRPs have joined 3GPP: - Mobile Wireless Internet Forum (MWIF) (see http://www.mwif.org) - 3G.IP Focus Group (3G.IP) (see http://www.3gip.org)

  8. New Market Representation Partners (2) CDMA Development Group has changed its scope as follows: “To lead the rapid evolution and deployment of CDMA-based systems, based on open standards and encompassing all core architectures, to meet the needs of markets around the world in an emerging, information-intensive environment” Once the change process is complete CDG will be welcomed as an MRP in 3GPP

  9. New Authentication Algorithm • 3GPP will fund the development of a new 3G Authentication Algorithm: • The Authentication Algorithm will be applied voluntarily, but, • A strong Authentication Algorithm is likely to be widely used, • The Algorithm may be suitable for other 3G systems.

  10. Open publication of security algorithms • 3GPP has discussed the open publication of Ciphering and Integrity algorithms: • Security experts strongly promote open publication, • OPs have sought permission for open publication, • ARIB and ETSI will publish in mid August.

  11. Creation of 3GPP IPR Register • 3GPP has created an IPR Register: • IPR Register is the sum of IPR declarations made to each OP, • Register comprises of a link to each OP IPR declarations listing, • IPR Register visible to all on the 3GPP web site.

  12. External Relations • Discussions started with IETF (via ISOC) for closer relations to be established. • Existing relationship with ITU-R to be used as a model for improved relationship with ITU-T. Discussion expected to take place in conjunction with GSC/RAST meeting (August, Sapporo).

  13. New working methods • The following are being explored: • On-line meeting registration (now in use) • Analysis of web site traffic (now in use) • Web casting of TSG meetings • Creation of a 3GPP Portal

  14. And finally….. During the month of May, the 3GPP web site had 6,5 Million hits. If you want to know why, have a look for yourself. http://www.3gpp.org
