  3. 1. Unveiled God’s Purpose: • a. Show Us His Love. • Luke 2:10 (NIV) - “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news…” • Christmas can be a very difficult time of year for many people. • In the midst of feelings of loss God has good news this Christmas. • He sent his Son into the world because he loves us!

  4. John 3:16 (NIV) - “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. • Romans 5:8 (NIV) - But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. • When we by faith put our trust in Christ and are united with him through his Spiritwe are never alone!

  5. b. Fill Us With His Joy. • Luke 2:10 (NIV) - “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. • The birth of Jesus would bring “great joy to all people.” • As a follower of Christ, joy involves the power and presence of God in our lives. • Psalm 16:11 (NIV) - You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

  6. God’s presence would be with his people. • “Emmanuel” – God with Us • Romans 15:13 (NIV) - May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. • JOY is one of the fruits of the Spirit. • John 15:10–11 (NIV) - If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

  7. c. Comfort Us With His Peace • In a world filled with unrest and turmoil we desperately look for peace. • Angel: “Don’t be afraid” • Luke 2:14 - “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to men on whom his favour rests.” • There is nothing more comforting than havingthe peace that can only come from the God who is peace.

  8. Jesus promised that he would send his Holy Spirit - the one who would provide comfort and peace. • John 14:27 (NIV) - Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. • The kind of peace that dissolves our fears (Philippians 4:7) • The kind of peace that maintains harmony among God’s people (Ephesians 4:3) • The kind of peace that will characterize God’s millennial kingdom when Christ will rule on earth for 1000 years after he returns to earth again.

  9. John 16:33 (NIV) - “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” • This Christmas put your hope in the Prince of Peace • Romans 5:1 (NIV) - Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

  10. 2. Identified God’s Plan • Christmas was always part of God’s plan. • God revealed that he had a plan to restore the brokenness that Adam & Eve brought into the world. • Genesis 3:15 (NIV) - And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

  11. a. Fulfillment of Scripture • Luke 2:11 (NIV) – “Today in the town of David…” • Jesus was born in Bethlehem. • A fulfillment of one of the many Old Testament prophecies. • Micah 5:2 (NIV) - “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

  12. It was prophesied that: • Jesus would be born the seed of a woman • That he would be born of a virgin • That he would be a descendant of David • That he would be born in Bethlehem • That he would be preceded by a messenger • That he would be rejected by his own people • That he would be pierced • That he would be crucified • God wanted the world to know that he had a plan to restore the relationship that was broken by sin and he would do it through his Son – the Messiah.

  13. 8 prophecies about Jesus: • The chance that any man might have lived to the present time and fulfilled all eight prophecies is 1 in 1017. • That would be 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000. • Consider 48 prophecies that point to Jesus and "we find the chance that any one man fulfilled all 48 prophecies to be 1 in 10157

  14. b. Provided Salvation • Luke 2:11b (NIV) – “…a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord” • He came to offer salvation from oppression •  the oppression of sin that enslaves us. • Matthew 1:21 (NIV) - She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” • We want freedom – relief - from our current problems our external problems.

  15. Remember the words of the angel: • “His name Jesus” – He will save His people from their sins. • “A Saviour is born – He is Christ the Lord!” • God DID solve our greatest problem: • He sent His son that first Christmasto save us from our sins.

  16. 3. Confirmed God’s Promise: • Luke 2:12 (NIV) - This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” • God’s promise to us: Jesus the Saviour can be found by those who are seeking him. • God gave this promise through the prophet Jeremiah • Jeremiah 29:11–12 (NIV) - For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD.

  17. What are you seeking – what are you looking for this Christmas? • Look for the Saviour! • He offers you love – joy – peace • He offers you forgiveness and a restored relationship with God. • He offers you hope and a future.

  18. Jesus said: • Matthew 11:28–30 (NIV) “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” • Let’s find the Saviour and make him Lord of our lives this Christmas!
