  2. What is an archetype? • A pattern that appears in literature across cultures and is repeated through the ages. • An archetype can be a character, plot, an image/symbol, or a setting (EOL World Literature 1177).

  3. Common Archetypes CHARACTERS • Angel / Fairy Godmother • Hero

  4. Archetypal characters • Angels / Fairy godmothers are typically represented as winged beings • who intervene in times of great need • or for the purpose of delivering a message of guidance or instruction from higher beings to humans.

  12. Archetypal Plots: • Battle between good and evil • a battle between two primal forces. Mankind shows eternal optimism in the continual portrayal of good triumphing over evil despite great odds.

  23. Common Archetypes: IMAGE / SYMBOL • Castle—A strong place of safety which holds treasure or princess, may be enchanted or bewitched. • Ice—ice, like the desert, represents ignorance, darkness, sterility, and death.
