GRADUATION PLANFOUNDATION HIGH SCHOOL PLAN + DISTINGUISHED LEVEL OF ACHIEVEMENT(FHSP + DLA) Foreign Language: 2 years of the same language Fine Art: 1 year PE: 1 year Electives 7 credits 26 Total Credits • There are some specific classes students may need in order to earn an endorsement (Chem, Phys, 4 Social Studies) • All students must earn an endorsement

  6. FHSP - WHAT’S AN ENDORSEMENT? An endorsement is essentially a sequence of courses in a career cluster that will better prepare our students for a career they are potentially interested in (think college major). STEM (Science, Tech., Engineering, Math) Business and Industry Public Services Arts and Humanities Multidisciplinary Studies

FHSP – ENDORSEMENT For Example: A student wanting to be a teacher can earn a “Public Service” endorsement and complete the following sequence of courses: 9th Grade: Princ. of Education 10th Grade: Human Growth & Dev. 11th Grade: Instructional Practices in Educ. 12th Grade: Practicum in Education

  8. FHSP – ENDORSEMENT Another Example: A student wanting to be an engineer can earn a “STEM” endorsement and complete the following sequence of courses: 9th Grade: Principles of Engineering 10th Grade: Engineering Design 11th Grade: Robotics I 12th Grade: Robotics II

  10. COURSE SELECTION DAY • Course selection day will be held in the Spring. It will consist of teachers giving their students recommendations for next years classes • Students will then have time to make any changes and confirmation of course selections for 2020-21 will be given to students later in the Spring

  15. CREDIT OPTIONS • Average to Pass (65 1ST semester + 75 2nd semester = 70) • Humble ISD Summer School Recovering failed credits only, $175-200 • On Campus Credit Recovery 11th and 12th grade, takes place of elective • After School Credit Recovery Begins today (Sept 16th),2x a week, $75

CREDIT OPTIONS • Texas Tech Correspondence Course (Online, $150-$250) • Texas Tech Credit By Exam -Recovering a failed credit ($40) -Acceleration/Testing Out (Free of charge, students must make $80%) • Retake Course • Dual Credit Academy Summer at an Humble ISD campus high school & college credit

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PSAT – October 16th Freshman and Sophomores • Free practice for the SAT • Receive feedback on strengths and weaknesses Juniors • Can qualify for National Merit Scholarships • Additional practice for SAT • Juniors not registered will take alternate assessment online & attendance is required

  18. COLLEGE ADMISSIONS TESTING SAT – www.collegeboard.org Perfect score is a 1600 (800 on math & 800 on reading/writing) Offers 44% more time per question on Reading but passages are more complex than ACT More algebra & less geometry than the ACT No penalty for guessing

  19. COLLEGE ADMISSIONS TESTING ACT – www.act.org Perfect score is a 36 Stand alone science section For students who rely more on calculators & enjoy geometry No penalty for guessing

COLLEGE ADMISSIONS The main criteria colleges consider when reviewing for acceptance: Grades in AP/Dual classes Rigor of High School Curriculum SAT or ACT scores GPA and class rank Additional considerations: Awards/Achievements, Community Service, Extracurricular Activities, Letters of Recommendation

Pass/Fail • Beyond Graduation Requirements • CANNOT pass/fail dual credit classes • Course grades are not included in GPA • Eligibility is still based on course grade • Advantageous for only small % of students • Conference with your counselor before deciding • Deadline is one week after first report card: November 1st • Must apply for each semester

THE TEXAS SUCCESS INITIATIVE (TSI) • State legislated program designed to improve student success in college by requiring all students attending public institutions in higher ed. to complete assessments in reading, writing, and math before enrolling in class (unless TSI exempt) • Lone Star College administers the TSI assessment • Prior to being placed in dual credit classes, students must either pass the TSI or be TSI exempt • TSI exemption: Students can be TSI exempt by making certain scores on the ACT, SAT, or STAAR
