Problem: • Many of Penn State Hazleton’s buildings and systems are well-aged and out of date. With rising costs of fuel, higher demand for alternative energy use, and the demand of a better environment, it is time for Penn State to invest in a ‘green’ environment.
Options: • Raising Awareness • Upgraded Buildings • Solar Panels • Wind Generators • Geothermal Heat Systems
Evaluation: • Expenses • Cosmetics • Energy Benefits
Awareness: One of the most simple, yet effective solutions is to basically raise awareness throughout the campus- including faculty and students…
Upgraded Systems/Buildings • Heating Systems • Windows
Solar Energy • Using any type of Solar technology can be very beneficial. • Can constantly produce usable current • Relatively simple to install • Cosmetics are not terrible. • Solar thermal technologies can be used for water heating, space heating, space cooling and process heat generation.
Wind Turbines • Wind energy is a great source of usable current. • Also easy to install • Depending on size, can be very visible and impede views. • Useful in NEPA region.
Geothermal Energy • Little to no changes in area cosmetics. • Little to no maintenance, built to last. • As long as the Earth is around, it will produce energy. • Installation • “According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, geo-exchange systems save homeowners 30-70 percent in heating costs, and 20-50 percent in cooling costs, compared to conventional systems.” • Geology
