Introduction This course will be following these guidelines: Organized by related techniques, called a spiral curriculum 15 Unit exams Each quarter you must choose, and complete, a project from one of the units studied within that quarter, all project ideas are posted next to grade sheet, these projects vary from research to presentation - participation is required! 2
What will you need? YOURSELF Open mind and willingness to learn 2 inch 3 ring binder for notes and handouts Pencil and Blue or Black pen ONLY for labs and exams 3
Grading 4 • This course will be graded using the following guidelines: • Exams and Quizzes– 50% of grade 33% = Unit Exams 17% = Castle Learning and Quizzes • Homework and Classwork – 25% of grade • Labs – 25% of grade
Grading 5 • Exams – 33% of grade • 15 unit exams • 1 comprehensive final exam commonly called the REGENTS
Grading 6 Quizzes and Project Participation – 17% • 4 projects, corresponding with each quarter • Be sure to check the project idea sheet regularly, don’t get caught at the quarter deadline without your projects!! • Expect Weekly quizzes that are cumulative and will be performed on Castle Learning Website…
Grading 7 Project Participation • First Quarter Possibilities Adopt an Element Celebrate Mole Day College Level Lab
Grading 8 Project Participation • Second Quarter Possibilities Build a Better Periodic Table Scientific Newspaper College Level Lab
Grading 9 Project Participation • Third Quarter Science Fair • Fourth Quarter Journal Research Paper
Grading 10 Labs – 25% of grade • Lab Reports always due TWO days after completion of lab • Graded using Rubric, out of 10 • 1 point off every day late • After 5 days, the best you can hope for is a satisfactory, which goes in as a 5 in the grade book but earns lab minutes….
Grading 11 Labs – 25% of grade • Typed Lab Reports Cover – to be stapled to front of hand-out or handed in separate in lieu of lab book • Includes – purpose/hypothesis/question, data tables, answers to questions, and conclusion • The conclusion will become more difficult each quarter!
Grading 12 Labs – 25% of grade • All labs must be turned in within the quarter it was completed • No make-up labs will be performed outside of quarter the lab was originally set-up • Reports can always be turned in up until end of year for credit to take REGENTS

Chemistry Intro 14 Chemistry- the study of composition, structure, and properties of matter, the changes which matter undergoes, and the energy accompanying these changes. Chemistry has been called the central science because it overlaps so many sciences. Engineering, Policeman, Fireman, Hair stylist ect.
Chemistry Intro 15 • Scientific Method- an orderly and systematic approach to gather knowledge. • Observation- using your senses • Hypothesis- an educated guess • Experiment- a control and variable • Conclusion- may raise new questions and lead to new hypotheses and new experiments.
Chemistry Intro 16 Natural law- how nature behaves but does not explain why nature behaves in that particular way. Ex: "The sun will come up tomorrow Theory- explains why nature behaves in the way described by the natural law. It also predicts the results of further experiments. Ex: Theory of evolution.

Types of Matter 25 Pure Substance 1. Element – CANNOT be broken down, smallest particle is known as an ATOM 2. Compound – CAN be broken down into its elements by breaking apart bonds, always exists in perfect whole number ratios
