REMAINS OF THE WORKS . Today the river is a small stream and little of the freezing works can be seen except a few bollards (a post on a ship wharf ), and the remains of the tall chimney. The sight is now a reserve called Nelson Park named after the Nelson Brothers who built the works.

The sight is now a reserve called Nelson Park named after the Nelson Brothers who built the works. HIPI AND TUNA • This is Hipi • Hipi means sheep in Maori Hipi and Tuna were tug boats which carried the meat down the Taruheru river out to the harbour where a ship was able to freeze the meat before sending it overseas. Hipi had a funnel that bent down when it went under bridges. My great great grandfather worked on the Hipi.
