CONTEXT • Prospect that current and forecasted human behaviors and lifestyles are not sustainable • Issues include: • Depletion of non-renewable resources (e.g., energy, metals) • Degradation of agricultural land • Depletion of fresh water supplies • Massive species extinction • Global climate change • Waste disposal (e.g., nuclear wastes)

  5. RESEARCH AGENDA • Fortunately (or unfortunately), research topics are plentiful and may include: • Reduction in materials consumption • Improvement of recycling technologies and policies • Sustainable development • Implementation of sustainability into the built, regional environment: for example, expanding alternative fuels use • Redesigning the built environment • Long-term, integrated planning and futures research • Environmental scanning • Technology assessment • Evaluation of programs and projects that promote environmental sustainability

ILLUSTRATIVE PROJECTS • Conduct life-cycle assessments associated with the electronics industry • Evaluate products to better inform consumer choice • Explore opportunities for regional sustainable economic development • Assess impacts of land use changes on future air quality • Assist communities make sustainable development decisions and in implementing sustainable choices • Conduct environmental scanning to address the impacts of new technologies on the environment

COMMITMENT TO COLLABORATION • UT Faculty – proposal development, project participation • UT Students – research assistantships, independent study, project participation • Across ISSE – interdisciplinary, ‘grand challenge projects’ and small, ad hoc projects • Community – e.g., economically disadvantaged rural counties, city and county governments, regional business and industry, educational institutions • ORNL – facilitate collaboration among researchers • International – staff exchanges, visiting positions, participation in important fora
