Know Which Essentials You Will Need in Your First Apartment Rental The search for you very first apartment rental is a rite of passage for the majority of Americans. It signifies the transition into adulthood and the readiness to step up and embrace all of the new responsibilities and opportunities that it brings. A big part of this is the ability to add your own taste and flare to an entire space, truly making it your own. It can, however, be extremely easy to go overboard when shopping for your very first apartment. This can cause problems if you find yourself in an apartment that may not be able to accommodate all of your newly purchased items. To avoid this conflict, check out this list of suggested items to ensure that you have all of your basic necessities at move-in and save the extras for once you are all settled into the space. Kitchen The kitchen is the heart of your new apartment rental, and you will want to make sure that it is sufficiently stocked with all of the goodies you will need to make a decent, home- cooked meal as you settle into your new space. That being said, you can probably leave the pasta maker and serving dishes off of your shopping list for now until you figure out how much room you will have for storage. The basics you will need are as follows: Pot and pan set A dish set that accommodates at least 4 people (to avoid constantly hand-washing dishes) Silverware Spatulas and wooden spoons Tupperware (for storing leftovers) Tin foil Can opener Crockpot (for easy, make ahead meals while you unpack) Trash can and bags Coffee maker Knife set Food Dish soap/dishwasher detergent Drying rack for dishes As you become more adjusted to your new kitchen, you can decide what other items are non-negotiable and what you have storage for.
Bathroom The bathroom in your apartment rental will be a place you will want to feel comfortable in, particularly at the end of a long day of moving. Make sure that you have all of the necessities to turn your bathroom into a makeshift spa. Towels Washcloths Day to day toiletries Bath mat(s) Bubble bath or Epsom salts to soak your sore muscles Shower curtain Toilet paper Hold off on buying shower caddies and organizational components until you are more familiar with the space and what your additional needs are. Living/Dining Rooms Making sure that you have a comfortable common space in your apartment rental will help you to feel more instantly at home, but that doesn’t mean that you are required to furnish the whole thing at once. You will, however, want to make sure that you have these basic pieces: Couch, futon, or daybed (hold off on purchasing this until you have chosen your apartment and measured available square footage). Coffee and/or dining table (or some surface that can act as a table on which to eat). Floor lamp or other form of additional lighting. Bedroom If your home is your castle, your bedroom is your throne room. This will be the place in your apartment rental where you will likely feel most at home and rested. It makes sense than, that this should be the room you put the most decorative elements into on moving day. At the bare minimum, make sure that you have the following items to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep to prepare for all the unpacking that is ahead of you:
Mattress Comfortable sheets and comforter Pillows Night table and lamp Dresser Hangers (always buy extra) Hamper Alarm clock Laundry Room/Miscellaneous Items An often overlooked space within your new apartment rental might be your laundry room, but you will want to make sure that you have freshly cleaned towels and bedding to make your first few nights in your new place the most comfortable. This will also likely be a space where you store many of your cleaning materials and miscellaneous items. Don’t forget to grab the following things on move-in day: Laundry detergent Fabric softener Dryer sheets Cleaning supplies (glass cleaner, disinfectant, sponges, toilet brush, toilet plunger, rags, etc.) Broom and mop Basic tool set Flashlight and batteries Searching for an Apartment Rental in the Hattiesburg Area?
