This program uses technology to personalize instruction, targeting individual student needs in math and world civilizations while preparing them for Common Core. It includes one-on-one devices, self-paced centers, online programs, and teacher conferences, among other strategies.

Math- Individualizing with Technology • Rationale: to try and meet the individual needs of each student while preparing them for the rigors of Common Core • One-on-one devices (Yogas) • Students will work both independently and in small groups • Self-Paced

How to Guide your Child on ALEKS • Encourage the use of ALEKS at home or anywhere with a computer and Internet connection- They are assigned two hours per week. • Your child simply needs to log in to the program at www.aleks.comusing the assigned login name and password • To monitor your child’s progress in ALEKS, please ask your child to log in to the program and check on their time and number of topics mastered.

Math Grades • 80% of the grade is based on assessments (evidence), 10% on class work (practice), and 10% on ALEKS (instruction, practice) • Most class work will be accountability points only (5/5).THIS DOES NOT MEAN EVERYTHING IS CORRECT! • Two hours of ALEKS each week (10/10- 1 pt. for every 12 minutes) • For all math classes, work may be turned in for full credit up to the day of the quiz. Work can be turned in for 70% credit up to the day of a module test or other cumulative assessment. • Quizzes and tests my be corrected for half points back, but are due within a week of being returned to the student. They must explain WHY they missed the problem and correct it • Once the module assessment is given, work will not be accepted for credit.
Requirements to Skip 7th Grade Math • Must have an A for both semesters in 6th grade math. • Must master 85% of both the 6th, and then 80% of the 7th grade content on ALEKS. • Must receive an “Advanced” on the end-of-year SBAC test.
Extra Help • With prior arrangement, students can: • Stay after school, (Tuesday-Thursday) • Come in at lunch • Come at 8:15 a.m.

Curriculum, U of Long Island, 1992 • Previously certified in 5 other states • 26th year of teaching, subbed 5 years • In the district eighteen years, nine years at Meridian Middle and ninth year at Galileo • Highly qualified for all middle school math & 6th grade World Civ.
Personal Bio Married for 33 years Two sons who are both in the military, Mike (27) at Ft. Bragg, NC & Brett (24) at Ft. Wainright, AK
World Civilizations • Covers from early man to the Middle Ages (about 1350) • Online Techbook from Discovery Education • History Alive – simulations, plays, & other interactive activities • Common Core – emphasis on reading & writing in the content area
What is “Project Based?” • World Civ. – History Alive projects • Usually done in class in small groups or pairs • Individual grades given for any group grade based on participation and final project • No added expense!
World Civilization Grades • Grades will be based on a points system • Projects and tests will have much higher point values • Work can be turned in for full credit up to the day of the Chapter test or other major assessment • Rubrics for all major projects will be sent home when they are assigned • The absolute final day to turn in a project may be after the test, IF they are close together • Projects turned in after a test will have 20% taken off
Communication Tools • Power School Parent – log on and check your child’s grade 24/7 • Parent & student log-ins are on their class schedule, but they can also be requested from the secretary • Can be set to send daily or weekly emails • Calendar and web links on my web page on the school website with assignments and due dates
