  1. My intent is to skip quickly through the 2004 'asks', with the exception of the platforms. Then focus on the 2006 asks. I particularly want to understand how much of the need is 'getting the products to work so we're not spending so much time on escalations' vs. 'I wish the product were 100x faster that the free file system, because then it would be easy to sell'. • I'd also like to ask whether, wrt HCL, it's more important to be consistent across arrays & platforms, or to be responsive to individual sales requests (which throws the dilemna in sharp contrast). • We'll then note the four requests that were repeated but not universal, and illustrate that there are many point requests, too. • Umesh's email didn't specifically request a SWOT from the regions, so there is very little info here. Nonetheless, there is one clear note for each in WOT (no one listed strengths - human nature :) • Finally, I'd like to get them to laugh at the end. • And give them personal note on my schedule.

  2. Storage Foundation (UNIX) SWOT Scott Kaiser Director, Storage Foundation

  3. Agenda • 2004 – What you asked for last time, what we delivered • 2006 – What you want this time • Three clear themes • Four common items • The rest • SWOT • A Special Prize • SWOT results 2006

  4. LET’S KEEP THIS INTERACTIVE

  5. Results from 2005(4) SWOT • 40 requests in eight categories • #1 Category (far and away) – Platform Support • Support HPUX: Itanium, 11.23, 4.1 release train • Support AIX 5.3 • Support Linux: Itanium, Opteron • Support Oracle 10g RAC on all platforms • Support VVR for RAC on all platforms ¾ 5.0 Plus – Executive commitment to timely platform support

  6. Other Categories & Requests (not prioritized) – 1 of 3

  7. Other Categories & Requests (not prioritized) – 2 of 3

  8. Other Categories & Requests (not prioritized) – 3 of 3

  9. Key Requests - 2006 • Far and away #1 – Performance, Scalability & Stability • Many individual requests within this category, from CVM to FlashSnap to “1000s of LUNs” to “fewer problems” to “faster than free” • All of Europe, most of Asia list as #1; common but not universal in US • Show of hands – performance or scalability?? • #2 – HCL • Broader, with more mid-tier arrays • AIX, HPUX, and Linux particularly • Timely support for new arrays • More visibility into what’s planned • Platform Parity (but also the array my customer needs on platform x right now) • #3 – Improve Collateral • Technical presentations are product focused, not solutions focused • Most collateral is old • Roadmap for MPs

  10. Requests heard consistently • 10G r2 support (still waiting…) • DST for Databases is not a broad need, but has several point opportunities • Bharti Cellular, BSNL, Amadeus, Italian DB archiving projects • A minority think it’s a complete waste of time • An Enterprise Vault agent for SF could be interesting • Lotus Notes agent took priority, but SSMG unlikely to build… • Again, a minority see this as having no benefit • Everything should be an option. My customers don’t like bundles.

  11. Small sample of requests with only 1-2 requests • I18N is a must-have for all products (Japan #1 request) • Tool to report on patch levels for our own products (do not charge for this) • Reduce downtime during upgrades • VIO support in AIX 5.3 • Compression in VxFS • License Auditing Tool • Build a manager for Solaris 10 containers/zones • “an API for QoSS” [Scott asks: What’s wrong with the existing API?] • Provide utility to plan migration from native OS tools: estimate conversion time, capacity, flag any problems, not require reboot, whether the private region size will be too small to allow VVR & FlashSnap…

  12. SWOT Proper – not really asked specifically • Weaknesses: Pricing • Opportunities: Integration (but only “meaningful” integration) • Threats: vLuns (Americas)

  13. On a light note: US Southeast wins “most schizophrenic” • Improve Performance, Scalability, Stability • “This seems more like blocking and tackling” • “Extremely important” • Leverage SANVM as a platform • “yes, need to compete with IBM” • “we should not bother” • EV Agent for SF • “I think it’s a great idea” • “Is there really a market for this?  Did I miss something?” • DST for Databases • “This is the wave of the future and we will have to supply this” • “This is, in my humble patch, of ZERO interest”

  14. SWOT - Key Requests - 2006 • Storage Foundation must be stable and scalable before adding new features • Improve the HCL, especially: • More Mid-tier arrays • Coverage on AIX, HPUX, and Linux • More frequent updates • One location • Integrate the products to validate the Symantec message • NBU, Security products, APM • Within SSMG
