  3. Dear Brethren, Change “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”
 — Charles Darwin Change is a brutal fact of life. If Freemasonry wants to continue to thrive and grow, it must face this brutal fact, learn to adapt, and break the cycle of recurring behavior. In the process of adapting, Freemasonry must tackle with the difficult question of what should change in response to a changing world and what should never change no matter the cost. We must know the difference between what is sacred and what is not; between what should never change and what should be always open for change. Simply asked, what we stand for and how we do things. We must never compromise our core principles which are timeless and unchanging. The art of Freemasonry is the practice of intentional change. Freemasonry teaches that life is about change. Masons are taught that we are always undergoing the process of change via the use of our working tools as we seek to change ourselves from rough to perfect ashlars, better fit for the Builder's use. Why then, is the new Worshipful Master of a lodge who seeks to bring about some change that he views as positive so often met with the words "That's not how we did it in prior year!", “It’s not going to work”? One of the most fundamental facts about change is that all change is an emotional experience. The main reason for negative reactions to change is that people always lose the feeling of comfort and competence. We are comfortable with what we know. It is important that we realize that one of the aims of Freemasonry is to provide stability. Freemasonry is a course of moral instruction. Freemasons are good men who seek to become better men through the application of Masonic principles in their lives. However, many things in our lodges, not only may change, but also should change. Masons who have traveled to lodges other than their own quickly learn that there are many good and equally Masonic ways for a lodge to function. Unfortunately, many of our lodge members are only familiar with the traditions and practices of their own individual lodge. Therefore, when the Worshipful Master attempts to improve his lodge by borrowing ideas learned from other lodges, he is met with opposition from less informed brothers in his lodge who consider his ideas foreign to Freemasonry. Change is essential for the growth and development of a person. A person’s ability to maximize their performance and productivity depends on their ability to change. “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”
