Undulator Systems Highlight/Issues • Replan Undulator Installation (RMB Meeting) LCLS Week Jan 05
Conventional Facilities Interface • Alcoves • May not be needed or useful • Location for electronics • In surface buildings • Looking into optimization of surface building shape to provide better coverage along entire length of undulator system • Above tunnel ceiling • Can be used for equipment that requires short cable runs but also maybe a heat generator • Walls • Still cold and the largest source of temperature gradient
Diagnostics • RFBPMs • Certainly would work for us • Need to get organized to do prototype tests • End-of-Undulator • Discussions started to organize all involved parties • This must continue and quickly • Starting to consider the use of a high-power system and a separate low-power system • Eases design • Low power system to be used to measure K in situ very accurately
Physics Requirement Document • Reading and Discussion done • Minor changes and clarifications added • Ready to sign ver 2 when changes are incorporated
AC Conductivity • Major improvements come from change of operating point • Drop to 200 pC vs 1 nC • Get a bit less energy that 1 nC but do to shorter pulse get higher brightness • But 200 pC is much more dependent on the taper than the 1 nC case • Very dependent on measurement of K • Additional improvement comes from Al and flat • Most important at 1 nC than at 200pC • Given the above statement and the fact that tapering to make the 200 pC case work well forces the decision on the choice of metal seen by the beam to be Al • Measurements of metals done • Results need to be analyzed but look good
Undulator System Integration Mockup • Would like to perform a complete mockup of a two undulator system • Will allow • Critical tolerance checking • Development of assembly procedure • Development of alignment procedures • Testing of long term stability • Testing of motion and motion repeatability • Etc. • Roughly 1 year from now
Alignment and Tolerances • Still in the process of refinement of all the numbers and methods needed to hold the undulator, quadrupoles and BPMs stable to micron type levels reasonable length times
