What are the most important things that make a class successful? How would students answer? Which of these do we have control over? Which are emergent?

ES101, Forum on the Environment Every year they are asked “What are the most important things that make a class successful?”
What makes a class successful? Five categories of factors mentioned: • Instructor traits and behaviors • Student traits and behaviors • Course content (e.g. topics and assignments) • Course delivery (e.g. pedagogy and style) • Outcomes (e.g. grade received)
Instructor traits and behaviors • Fair • Accessible • Engaging/Interesting • Cares about the topic/Enthusiastic • “Great professor”
Student traits and behaviors • Hard work • Attendance • Do the work/reading – be prepared • Participate in class • Interest in topic
Course content • Interesting topics • Relevant/useful information • Thought provoking lectures • Relevant/useful/well-defined assignments • Interesting readings/supplemental material
Course delivery • Clear presentations • Interactive discussions • Organized/well-structured • Clear outline/expectations • Fun
Outcomes • Good grade • Learned from it/retained knowledge • Can see how to use what I’ve learned • Interested and able to share what I’ve learned
Is there a difference between 1st year students and seniors?

What is “success”? What aspects of it do we have control over as instructors? How can we help our students be successful in our classes? Some final thoughts?
