Our Vision for Year 10 ‘Every Child Matters’ Building on success 55% A* - C in Unit 1 GCSE maths 96% success in ICT OCR National Award 70 students already have GCSE equivalent in Functional Maths & English
By July Y11 • 75% A* - C in English and Maths GCSE • 35% minimum students with 3 A* grades at GCSE • 35% of students will gain English Baccaulaureate (EBacc) • Target 100% will gain 5 Level 2 qualifications
Year 10 targets • 65% A* - C in English • 65% A* - C in Unit 1 & 2 Maths GCSE • January Modules in linear maths, core Science, English, MFL
The focus for this year….. • Allstudents will have completed English GCSE • All students will have completed Unit 1 and 2 of maths GCSE except Green band and selected other linear students, who will complete the whole GCSE in Y10. • All students will complete a full GCSE in Science (Core Science) • Green band students will also complete level 2 qualificationsin Equality and Diversity and their options and have already gained BTEC Science (5 A* - C by the end of Y10)

English Language GCSE Year 10 Four Controlled Assessments Two exam papers Exam date: 10th January 2011
Unit 3: Writing (Using Language)Examples of tasks • The Writing requirements will include a piece of descriptive writing and a piece of narrativewriting • Candidates will be required to complete ONE piece of first person and ONE piece of third person writing • The Writing assignments could be given about 15 hours of preparation time • Students are allowed up to two hours in total for the two pieces (one hour for each piece) • Each piece will be marked out of 20 • 14 marks for content and organisation • 6 marks for sentence structure, punctuation and spelling. Time allowance for all the writing work: 2 hours
WJEC Set tasks:Descriptive/Narrative questions Descriptive Choose one of the following: (a) The scene in a busy supermarket (b) The scene in a railway or bus station (c) The scene at a funfair (d) The scene on a beach in the summer (e) The scene in a school playground at the beginning of the morning. Narrative/expressive Any of the tasks listed for the GCSE English First and Third person writing may be Used, or one of the following: (a) The test (b) Appearing on stage (c) Write a story beginning with the words: ‘She realised it was a mistake as soon as she turned the corner.’ (d) Only my Mum could embarrass me like that! (e) Hero Time allowance for all the writing work: 2 hours
Studying spoken language: Variations, choices, change in spoken language (10%) • Candidates will be required to study an aspect of spoken language • The assignment will be a sustained response to their own or others’ uses of spoken language which has been presented by recording, transcript or recollection • It is expected that the final response to the assessed Spoken Language will take two hours • The assignment will be marked out of 20
Studying spoken language: Variations, choices, change in spoken language (10%) • Each candidate must complete an assignment based on one of the following areas of study: • How spoken language is used in different contexts (we will be looking at the language of Lord Sugar and the Junior Apprentice) • How spoken language is adapted to different listeners. • The effects of choices in the use of standard and non-standard forms of spoken language. Time allowance for the Spoken Language controlled assessment:2 hours
The Extended literary text • Unit 3: Studying written language • Candidates need to present one assignment which is an essay based on a novel. • (Year 10 completed this task on Of Mice and Men in Year 9 – students will have the opportunity to improve this piece )
Unit 1 Studying Written Language: 10th January 2011 1 hour • 2 non-fiction reading texts taken from a variety of different types of media all linked by topic. • Newspaper articles • Websites • Biographies • Interviews • Leaflets. • There are 4 questions – each worth 10 marks each. • Students are advised to spend 12-13 minutes on each question, which allows for some reading time. Time allowance for unit 1: 1 hour
This exam runs immediately after Unit 1 Unit 2 Using Written Language: 10th January 20111 hour • Two writing tasks - both worth 20 marks each. • Students are advised to divide the time equally, 30 minutes on each task. • The tasks can include: • letters (formal or informal) • articles/reviews • reports • leaflets • speeches • The 20 marks are divided between: • content and organisation (13 marks) • sentence structure, punctuation, spelling (7 marks) Time allowance for unit 2: 1 hour
To summarise… • All students will complete 4 controlled assessments • All students will take their GCSE English Language examination in January 2012

GCSE Mathematics • AQA GCSE Mathematics B (Modular, no coursework) at Foundation or Higher tier • OCR GCSE Mathematics A – J512 (January) then J562 (from June); only applies to Foundation tier students
AQA GCSE Mathematics B (Modular, no coursework) Students take 3 unit exams • Unit 1 (26.6%) • This examines Statistics and Number • All students should now have completed this exam
AQA GCSE Mathematics B (Modular, no coursework) • Unit 2 (33.3%) • This examines Algebra and Number • All students will take this for the first time on 7th March 2012 • 1hour 15 minutes non-calculator paper
AQA GCSE Mathematics B (Modular, no coursework) • Unit 3 (40%) • This examines Geometry and Algebra (with some Number) • All students will take this exam in November 2012 • 1 hour and 30 minutes calculator paper • Re-sit opportunity in June 2013
OCR GCSE Mathematics A – J512 • Linear specification – whole syllabus is examined in 2 separate 2 hour papers • Foundation tier – grades C to G • Paper 1 (calculator not allowed) – 11th January 2012 • Paper 2 (calculator allowed) – 16th January 2012

Revision Support • You can help your child revise by ; • Use the VLE • Encouraging them to attend revision sessions • Buying them the revision guide and using it with them • Asking them to find out the meanings of the key words / processes on the support sheet • Get them to draw flow charts of processes • Get them to show you ‘flash cards’ they have made for revision and test them on it • Ask to see their marked end of module tests so you know where they went wrong
