  1. Clean as a BREEZE Fossil fuels pollute the air and heat the planet. You say you want a revolution? You will find it in the sun and the wind.

  2. 20th Century • Horse-drawn carriages automobiles. • Fossil fuel offered great amounts of energy in an easily portable and storable form. • Fossil fuels = conventional energy sources. • Petroleum in industry: • chemical precursor to plastics. • fuel for the automobile and airplane.

  3. However… • Smog and other forms of air pollution, global warming, climate change, and an accelerating depletion of natural resources. • Long-term impact on the environment.

  4. 21st century • Fossil fuels scarce and more expensive. • More demand. • Running out of oil, SOON! • Synthetic materials, advanced electronics, and biotechnology efficiently and cleanly provide energy.

  5. Here comes the SUN!

  6. Solar Cells • Far more expensive than conventional generators. • Least expensive source of power, not connected to an electric grid.

  7. Japan • dwelling with silicon roof tiles, supported by government. • Switzerland and Germany • office with them integrated into the glass, allowing windows to produce power while transmitting filtered sunlight. • European analysts • covering flat roof space of building with solar cells could provide half of three quarters.

  8. Blowing in the WIND

  9. Wind-power • Modern with tough fiber-glass blades and electronic controls. • Cost is comparable to fossil-fuel power and still falling. • Thousands have been installed in Europe. Denmark 6% of its electricity from wind power. • India and China  installing.

  10. Windmill • Currents of air to put out strong currents of electricity. • Energizing without hurting environment.

  11. Fuel Cell • Cleanly and quietly combine with hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity. • Waste = WATER. • Use in shuttle fleet • Could replace the internal combustion engines that power vehicles.

  12. Toshiba develops MP3 player with 60 hour fuel cell battery.

  13. Clean Energy • Use of clean power is growing much faster. • An energy revolution would offer huge business opportunities. • Renewable energy never runs out. • Sunlight contains 6,000 times as much energy as is used by all countries combined.
