  2. Today... • What is the circulatory system? • Where and how to find your own pulse • Experiment with heart monitors • Will music and color change your heart beat?

The Circulatory System Overview • Moves nutrients, gases, hormones, blood cells throughout the body • 60,000 miles of blood vessels supply the various tissues of our bodies • The heart is the driving force of the circulatory system, beating 100,000 times each day • The lungs are responsible for the exchange of O2 and CO2

  4. Blood • Red blood cells, erythrocytes, transport gases like O2 and CO2 • Platelets help clot wounds • White blood cells, leukocytes, are part of the immune system • Fun fact about blood: In the early 19th century, some advertisements claimed that riding the carousel was good for the circulation of blood!!!

  5. The Heart • Heart pumps oxygenated blood to the body and deoxygenated blood to the lungs • 4 total chambers, 4 valves, 2 electrical nodes • “Lub-dub” ?

Healthy Hearts • Heart disease claims 1 life every 34 seconds in the US • Leading cause of death in the US (616,067 in 2009) • Ways to improve your cardiovascular system: • Exercise once a day • Eat a well-balanced diet • Remain stress free by removing yourself from difficult environments • Stay away from cigarettes, second-hand smoke, and other drugs

  7. Heart Rate • Heart rate is number of heart beats per minute • Measure heart rate at the carotid, radial, or posterior tibial artery • Use two fingers and a watch or a pulse meter

Heart Rate Continued... • Resting heart rate is the number of beats per minute when you are at complete rest • Maximum heart rate is the highest number of beats the heart can contract in 1 minute • Maximum heart rate is predicted: • Boys Maximum heart rate = 226 – Age • Girls’ Maximum heart rate = 220- Age
