PURPOSE The purpose of this presentation is to show a river flow of information about the demographics, geography, natural resources, and other environmental factors that make Puerto Rico such a great country to visit.
DEMOGRAPHICS • The inhabitants of Puerto Rico immediately before the first European contact were apart of the Arawak group of Amerindians. During this time period, Puerto Ricans considered themselves “Boricuas”. • Christopher Columbus named “Boricuas” in 1493 as the Taino. • The Spanish conquered the island in 1508 ultimately colonizing it and enslaved the natives. • The taino population eventually decreased due to disease, warfare, forced labor, and the massive amount of slaves imported from Africa.
CONTINUED • There is currently a population of • 3,725,789 living in Puerto Rico. • Men – 1,785,171 Women – 1.940.618 • Puerto Rico is home to the largest Muslim Community. • The Catholic Religion is the dominant religion. • San Juan is the city for Puerto Rico.

P.R. GOVERMENT • National Holiday is July 4th, - U.S. Independence day. • Government type is: Commonwealth • Organized territory of the United States. • Has an executive branch, legislative branch & judicial branch. • “La Borinquena” is the national anthem.
CONTINUED • Puerto Rico is a major hub of Carribean commerce, finance & tourism. • San Juan is one of the world’s busiest cruise – ship ports. • Puerto Rico standard of living is among the highest in the western hemisphere. • The U.S. Navy has been using Vieques Island as a bombing range since 1940.
ECONOMY • Growth Rate – 5.8% • Inflation – 3.6% • Unemployment – 12% • White (mostly spanish) – 80.5%, Black 8%, Asian 0.2%, mixed and other 10.9% • Languages – Both spanish & english • Monetary Unit – U.S. Dollar
CONTINUED • Economic summary - $64.84 Billion; per capita $16,300. • Agriculture – Sugarcane, Coffee, Pineapples, Plantains, Bananas, Livestock products; chickens, • Labor Force – 1.286million, agriculture 2.1%, industry 19% • Industries – Pharmaceuticals, electronics, apparel, food products & tourism.
CONTINUED • Natural Resources – copper & nickel, offshore/onshore oil, • Exports – Gross $75.11 billion; chemicals, electronics, apparel, canned tuna, rum, beverages concentrates, medical equipment • Import – Gross $46.6 billion; chemicals, machinery & equipment, clothing, food, fish, petroleum products. • Major Trading Partners – U.S., U.K., Netherlands, Dominican Republic, Ireland, Japan.
FUN FACTS • Puerto Rico has a music museum called “Museo de la MusicaPuertorriquena”. • Its an early 20th century structure; it was designed in 1912 by an architect named • Felix Juan Serralles. • Offers an extensive collection of period musical instruments, historic photos, • music manuscripts, posters, audio & video features. • The genres of music in the museum are bomba, salsa, and plena. • Some instruments used for viewing are flutes made from bamboo and palm • and drums carved from a tree trunk.
P.R MODERNIZATION PROGRAM • Program helped to enhance student learn capabilities to prepare them for the 21st century. • Options being taken to improve quality of education; new community art • project, Better school vision that fits the schools philosophy, open up a • community pavilion. • New science lab/new art center. • Improve student achievement through the creation of Learning. • New school educational vision. • Have state of the art technology available to the students. • Design Sustainable schools.
PREDICTIONS OF THE NATION • Operation Bootstrap – developmental program used as a blueprint to help third world countries improve their exportation. • Puerto Rico would no longer like to use this economic development program because community organizations feel economic alternatives are not being presented. • Economists of P.R. have the idea P.R. economy is unbalance. • Political elites would like Puerto Rico to become an independent country separate from the United States.
