Would you like fries with that From chapter 10 in Fast Food Nation By Eric Schlosser Review by Zach Cox and Landon Dame
CH 10 • Chapter 10 begins with the author talking about a small town in Germany that has a history of being the first to change • In 1923 the small town of Plauen was the first town to be fully National Socialist. (aka Nazi) • In 1990, it was the first city to have mcdonalds in all of germany
Continued… • Schlosser also continues that Mcdonalds is the most recognizable brand in the entire world. • Over coca cola and KFC • Also, Mcdonalds earns most of its profit outside of the United States • 17000 restaurants in over 120 countries
FFN • He also noted that Mcdonalds is very selective about where they decide to put their next fast food joint • they tend to place them near areas of high concentration and retail stores. • Mcdonalds is really competitive when it comes to purchasing land for their restaurants
Everybody wake up, the presentation is almost over • This is one of Mcdonalds notable ad campaigns during the 90’s
Later on in the Chapter… • Schlosser talks of his experience in Vegas when he meets former Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev in Las Vegas • Gorbachev was a shell of what he once was and was calling for Russia to become more “Americanized” • He also wanted an economic alliance with America and their network of fast food chains • Many of the people at this presentation were ignoring the celebrity speaker and some even dozed off.
Importance of this chapter • It shows that • America’s fast food chains have a stranglehold over the world • McDonalds is a democratic entity within itself and has a huge influence in government because of its great amount of money • Many other world leaders wish to become more like America and Schlosser sees that this could spread our health and laziness problems
