Before going into deeper I/we would like to give brief about Plywood- Plywood is actually a composite of several thin sheets of wood veneer. Each sheet is manufactured to have a specific set of strength, span and appearance characteristics. It is generally used for making interior cabinets for homes and offices. It is cheaper compared to good quality solid wood. Plywood is made from different species of wood and therefore come indifferent qualities. In general, there are two types of Wood are available in Inda, Hardwood and Softwood. Hardwood Ply is made from veneers or wood obtained from species like Teakwood, Gurjan wood. Plywood made from veneers obtained from above-mentioned trees are also termed as 100% hardwood plywood. Therefore hardwood plywood is expensive product too. While Softwood Ply is made from veneers or wood obtained from species like mango wood. Softwood ply is not as strong as hardwood ply and therefore come for a cheaper rate than hardwood of the same number of ply. Usually, hardwood is used to make plywood for its strength and durability, while some use softwood to make plywood to sell low cost, which in return affects the quality of plywood. Generally, in the Indian market, there are Commercial Ply or MR Grade / Marine Ply / BWR Ply/ BWP Ply. Commercial Ply or MR Grade: MR is abbreviated as Moisture resistant. Moisture Resistant is not the same as Waterproof which means that the plywood can withstand some amount of moisture, dampness and humidity. Commercial Ply is used for the areas that are not much affected to moisture such as Bedrooms, Kitchen, Wardrobes, Cabinets, etc... Marine Grade Ply: Marine plywood is completely waterproof plywood that has been specifically manufactured for marine applications. Indian standard for Marine plywood is specified in the document as IS:710 so it is also called as Marine710 grade. Marine plywood is of Exterior grade and meant for interior and exterior uses. It’s better than the exterior grade Boiling Water resistant plywood that is used for making kitchen furniture. Marine Ply is costlier compared to Marine Ply. BWR Plywood: Acronym for BWR is “Boiling Water Resistant”. It is one type of hardwood ply, expensive and more resistant to water and humidity compared to Marine ply and commercial ply. Durable for a long time and very expensive. The BWR Plywood is commonly used for application areas where exposure to water such as bathrooms. BWP Plywood: Acronym for BWP is “Boiling Water Proof”. The BWP Grade Plywood quality is similar to marine ply 710 Grade. It has features similar to marine ply IS 710.BWP Plywood is borer proof and termite resistant. The Standard sizes of Plywood are 8 x 4 feet sizes from most of the manufacturers, there are various thicknesses available such as 4mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 16mm, 19mm, 24mm, 25mm, 32mm.
