Discovery Packages • Overview • How can LOG help?
Recent example: CMS “SUSY” paper Dave Barney, LOG Meeting 3rd February 2011
CMS SUSY Paper: what did the press want? • Simple text explaining the contents of the paper • Explanation of the significance of the search • Relationship between SUSY and Dark Matter • Importance of Dark Matter basic question about the structure of the Universe • Quotes from physicists • Related event displays (was VERY difficult in this case!) • Photographs (were not possible in this case) Dave Barney, LOG Meeting 3rd February 2011
Example Discoveries/Measurements • Standard Model Higgs ( “substance” of the Universe) • SUSY ( Dark Matter) • Heavy bosons e.g. Z’ ( extra dimensions) • Quark compositeness • Quark Gluon Plasma ( early Universe evolution – why it is “clumpy” now) • CP violation in B sector ( where has all the anti-matter gone?) • Can also turn these upside-down – i.e. these things have NOT been discovered so the theory is wrong! Dave Barney, LOG Meeting 3rd February 2011
Need to address these questions: • What has been discovered? • Why is it important? i.e. what question(s) about our Universe does this address? • How was the discovery made? • What does this “look like” in the detector? • Who discovered it? • What happens next? What are the implications for the LHC etc.? • How does this affect me? Or the world in general? • Are any practical applications expected? • How can I teach about this in my school? • How can I become involved in this? • The response to each question may require a variety of different types of media • Some exists already need to collate • Some does not exist need to identify, plan & produce Dave Barney, LOG Meeting 3rd February 2011
Propose to have a simple matrix for each “discovery” Dave Barney, LOG Meeting 3rd February 2011
How can LOG help? • Clearly there is a big overlap between LOG and IPPOG • Help define the most likely discoveries & important measurements for 2011 • Help define the “matrices” • Questions • Material types • Help find appropriate content • To be stored in the IPPOG database • Help identify missing items • E.g. Help with “story boards” for animations etc. • Hopefully (!) some resources available within experiments and CERN (etc.) to produce the missing materials • Translations Dave Barney, LOG Meeting 3rd February 2011
