Energy • Every thing we do needs energy:eating, sleeping, walking, ridding a bike, watching TV • None of these can happen without energy. • Without energy NOTHING can happen!
Movement • Every event, every single change involves movement. • To make things move ENERGY is needed.
Source of energy • Where does a car gets its energy from? • Where does a cyclist get her energy from?
Source of energy • Energy from petrol • Energy from the food she eats.
What has energy? • Anything that can cause movement has energy.
What are the main types of energy? Sound energy The energy in a sound wave makes your ear drum vibrate.
Light energy • The energy of light waves can be used to generate electricity and make a motor turn around. • Also solar cells and solar panels.
Heat energy • The molecules in a glass of hot water have more energy than those in a glass of cold water.
Electrical energy • Electric currents have energy. • The electric current makes the motor turn in a car or in an electrical devise.
Chemical energy • All fuels store energy • A chemical reaction with oxygen releases this energy • Food is our fuel and is a type of chemical energy • Chemical energy is sometimes called stored energy.
Gravitational potential energy • When something is lifted up – it gains energy. • A crane lifting a block • People moving up a ski lift • Raising a book in the air
Kinetic energy • (movement energy) • All moving things have energy • They can cause other things to move.
Elastic potential energy • The energy stored in a rubber band can make a toy move
