Chapter 1 - Government and People 2 Government and People Definitions of Key Terms : Government is the individuals, institutions, and processes that make the rules for society and possess the power to enforce them. Government makes rules to decide who gets what of the valued things in a society. Politics is the pursuit and exercise of power.

    3. Chapter 1 - Government and People 3 Government and People Democracy is the “rule by the people.” The concept of democracy includes the idea of majority rule. Republic – a form of government in which the people are sovereign but their power is exercised by their elected representatives. The term republic means the same as Representative Democracy.

    4. Chapter 1 - Government and People 4 Government and People Reciprocal Nature of Democratic Power. Impact of Government on the People: Extends from birth to death Laws, traffic laws, public school, taxes, unemployment insurance, welfare, Medicare, Social Security. Obey or pay Federal, state, and local influence sometimes overlaps.

Voting – the most important way people express their political voice. Party activity – provides a vehicle of competition and choice. Public Opinion – both elected officials and people pay attention to polls.

They want the government to respond to their needs. Direct Action – the right of the people to protest the actions of government and literally, “take it to the streets.”

    7. Chapter 1 - Government and People 7 Government and People Political system is compared to a stereo system: Views political life as a system of interrelated activities. Inputs – demands on the system Outputs – the binding decisions it makes in the form of laws, regulations, or judicial decisions Feedback – response of society to government.
