Government is the individuals, institutions, and processes that make the rules for society and possess the power to enforce them. Government makes rules to decide who gets what of the valued things in a society.
Politics is the pursuit and exercise of power.
3. Chapter 1 - Government and People 3 Government and People Democracy is the “rule by the people.” The concept of democracy includes the idea of majority rule.
Republic – a form of government in which the people are sovereign but their power is exercised by their elected representatives. The term republic means the same as Representative Democracy.

Impact of Government on the People:
Extends from birth to death
Laws, traffic laws, public school, taxes, unemployment insurance, welfare, Medicare, Social Security.
