INTEGRAL SHUTTERdefined: • A device that integrates a white-beam stop, two monochromatic-beam shutters, a safety stop and a collimator into one assembly.
P6 Shutters at the APS P6-20 shutter is the original design. • 1-BM-A P6-20 Integral Shutter. • 2-BM-A P6-20 Integral Shutter. • 12-BM-A P6-20 Integral Shutter - locked in mono mode. • 17-BM-A Originally a P6 shutter - locked in mono mode. Significantly modified P6 shutter.

P6 Components/function • White Beam Photon Stop – absorbs high power x-rays in mono mode. • (2) Mono-beam Shutters – redundant protection, absorbs mono beam. • Safety Stop – blocks bremsstahlung radiation in mono mode. • Collimator – 18 x 120 mm aperture, passes white or mono beam depending on mode setting. • Kirk-key interlock system - guarantees proper component operation.

P6 vs. P4 SHUTTERS–Similarities: The P6 shutter is very similar to the P4 shutter. Both are integral shutters & include the same internal components. The P6 and P4 integral shutters were the first shutter used for BM/ID beamlines at the APS, at Sectors 1 & 2.
P6 vs. P4 SHUTTERS -Differences: • P6 – Used in BM beamlines only, P4 – ID only. • White Beam Photon Stop design (P6 – block, P4 – hockey stick) • Collimator opening size (P6 -18x120mm, P4 -18x80mm) • Design Geometry
Reliability of P6 Shutters • Originally designed for 10 years. 1-BM and 2-BM P6 shutters in operation for 10 years and counting. • Shutter Stats (response time) available thru EPICS for not only PS1/PS2 but for other beamline shutters as well. Expected failures for P6 shutters (& other shutters) • Failure of seals, resulting in restricted operation and/or vacuum leaks. • Failure of air actuators. • Failure of bellows, resulting in vacuum leaks.
