2. Software Software:
In general is the key aspect to understanding computers and gaining computer literacy.
Definition: a series of instructions that tells a computer component (hardware) how to perform a task.
3. Types of Software There are two forms of software, System Software and Application Software.
System Software: Programs that control the operations of a computer and/or computer devices (printer, cdrom, etc.
4. Operating Systems A type of system software
Operating System (OS) Definition:
Contains instructions that coordinate all of the activities of the hardware devices in a computer.
5. Operating Systems A computer (PC) cannot function without an operating system.
OS also contains instructions that allow you to run application software.
Application software is designed to “run” within a certain OS, therefore your OS determines the types of software available.
6. Operating Systems OS is typically stored on the hard drive.
The core of the OS is know as the kernel.
This is responsible for managing memory, files, and devices; maintains computers clock (date and time); assigns the necessary computer components (resources) for running a task, software package, etc.

10. Application Software Application Software: Programs designed to perform a specific task for users. Typically includes: word processing, spreadsheets, email, database, web browser, etc.
There are 4 non-mutually exclusive categories of application software. These are as follows:
Productivity/Business, Graphic Design/Multimedia, Home/Personal/Educational, Communications.

Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Database, Presentation Graphics, Accounting, Project Management. Graphic Design/Multimedia examples:
CAD (computer aided design), Desktop Publishing (adobe photoshop), Paint/Imaging, Multimedia authoring, web page authoring.
