  1. Existentialismby Daren Wilkerson A Very Basic Look (because this is pretty new to me, too!)

  2. Who Am I?

  3. No, seriously . . . Who Am I?

  4. This is what Existentialist writers think about a lot, and write about a lot.

  5. Existentialism: A Heavy Idea • Typically thought of as 19th and 20th century philosophical approach, it broadly deals with the nature of existence and the meaning of life. It asks questions like: Who am I? Why am I here? What separates me from other people? Do I have a soul? What do my emotions mean? What are my responsibilities as a human? Why is life really stupid and strange and cruel sometimes?

  6. So who are the Existentialists?

  7. BIG Names in Existentialism(a short list . . . ) • SØren Keirkegaard (Danish Philosopher 1813-1855) • Friedrich Nietzche (German Philosopher 1844-1900) • Martin Heidegger (German Philosopher 1889-1976) • Jean-Paul Sartre (French Philosopher 1905-1980) • Simone de Beauvoir (French Philosopher 1908-1986) • Albert Camus (French Algerian Author and Philosopher 1913-1960)

  8. Existentialist Plays, Books and Films (a very short list) • Hamlet • The Metamorphosis • Waiting for Godot • Fight Club • Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) • Taxi Driver • Synecdoche, New York

  9. Existentialism: Major Ideas, Themes and Concerns • Concrete Existence (am I really here?) • Existence before Essence (a man lives, rather than is) • Reason insufficient to deal with the depth of human life (it’s more complex than that!) • Alienation and Estrangement (Why don’t I fit in?) • Anxiety (I’m losing my mind!) • Roles (I don’t have to be this person today)

  10. Themes and Big Ideas Continued • Authenticity (what’s real and what isn’t?) • The Other and The Look (I see you, but do you see me?) • Encountering Nothingness (life has no meaning) • The Double-Edged sword of Freedom (I’m free, now what do I do?) • The Absurd (this is all just so ridiculous, and none of it means anything!—And I’m not talking about these notes or the idea of Existentialism, I’m talking about the very notion of being alive)

  11. Okay, so . . . • This is a lot to deal with in a Lit and Film class. I’m feeling pretty lost. I mean, people earn their Ph.D.’s in this stuff, right? I’m just in high school • Yes, that’s true, but go back through the notes you just took, and consider how much of what you just wrote down seems to fit into The Invention of Morel and the films we’ve watched? What theme above can you personally relate to?
