Advantages of reduced application volumes AlanMcCracken www@bdmagro.com
Introduction • General misconceptions: More volume = better coverage • Thicker canopy more volumes! • Lack of understanding of simple mechanics. • High volumes/nozzle = large droplets/flooding of atomizers • Example: • A typical agricultural aircraft applying fungicides on corn. • Flying speed: 130 mph Swath width: 75 ft • Acres/minute: 130 mph x 75 ft / 495 = 19.70 • Aircraft with 40 nozzles: • Spray volume: 1 gpa 5 gpa • Flow rate/minute/nozzle; 0.49 2.46
Problems with equipment Nozzles worn Nozzles worn/leaking
Pawnee new nozzles D4-45Variation due to corroded springs in check valves
Valve springs –different pressures-no air bleed to end of boom!
CDA signifies the production of ideally sized droplets for each application Flying insects 50 micron drops Insects on plants 100-250 micron drops Diseases on plants 100-250 micron drops Plants 250-400 micron drops
Rain -------- versus ------------Fog - -------------------waterfall Droplet penetration
Drift reduction- coverage not adequate for fungicides/insecticides Large nozzles @ 0 graus Large droplets
Problems mechanical • Volume- Do not increase volume! • Phytotoxicity- Eliminate using smaller droplets • Penetration – better with less volume • Crop coverage –better with more nozzles • Results- superior control of rust/insects in soybeans/corn
Effect of angle of collection system- Spray Volume 8 lts/ha.Number of droplets collected per cm² [Average of 119 droplets/cm² on the inclined cards]
Effect of angle of collection system Spray Volume 8 lts/ha.Number of droplets collected per cm²
Deposition of Fungicide 5 lts/ha-LVO with Rotary atomizers
Importance droplet spectrum 20 lts/ha – Distribution Conventional Nozzles 20 lts/ha-distribution Rotary atomizers
Droplets collected during commercial applicationVolume 12 lts/ha [average 58 droplets/cm²]
Conclusions • Effective swath width: 18 meters [61 ft] for the application rate and droplet spectrum utilized in the test. • Collection papers @ 45 degrees 3- 5 times more efficient than those placed horizontally. • A spray volume of 8 -12 liters/hectare is sufficient with 119 droplets/cm² collected • Commercial application Vol: 12 liters/hectare 100% control of stink bugs in corn.
Control of soybean rust- BR Control Fungicide 6 lts/ha BVO
Glyphosate –Vol 7 liters/ha Not treated 8 days after application
