Blister prevention • A pair of thin inner socks under thicker hiking socks will reduce the friction. • Knee high nylons • Wear shoes that are broken in! • Running shoes • If you feel a hot spot forming, stop and fix it right away before it becomes a blister • Mole skin – lots of it!
Choose good shoes! No!! YES!!
Moleskin! Cut a hole in the center for the blister. Use large pieces of moleskin

Sunburns • Wear hats and pioneer clothing • Sunscreen on exposed skin

Sprains and Strains • Sprains occur mainly when you are not paying attention!
Sprains and strains • Rest, ice, compression, elevation • If the person is unable to walk or if the symptoms last more than a couple of hours contact the medical staff. • If there is bleeding other than a scrape it is probably a fracture.
Fractures vs. sprains • It can be hard to tell unless there is deformity • Generally fractures have more bruising • Just because the person can walk on it does not mean it is not broken • Both can be quite swollen

Bleeding – cuts and scratches • For minor cuts and scratches wash the wound and put some Neosporin and a clean bandage on it. • And…

Puncture wounds • Punctures are usually more serious than they may seem. • There is more risk for infection. • You want them to bleed a little to push the bacteria out. • Don’t cover at first or put pressure on them unless there is a lot of bleeding • If there is something stuck in the body don’t pull it out! • If it is a sliver your ma or pa can pull it out.
Transporting injured patients • Ankle pull • Shoulder pull • Blanket pull • One person lift • Firefighter carry • Pack strap carry • Two person carry
