Advanced Placement Courses/Exams
What is the difference between AP and other college-prep or honors courses? • AP courses • are designed by teams of college professors and expert secondary school teachers • have teachers who have undergone special training • have a similar rigor to actual college courses • are given a weighted grade: When determining GPA, an extra grade point will be added to each passing AP grade taken at the high school level
The AP Exam • AP exams are given in May of each year and are not required but strongly encouraged. • Good exam scores impress college and program admissions committees as well as scholarship committees. • Good AP scores help students gain access to honors college courses and programs. Students can also earn college credit for good AP exam scores.
AP Exam • The cost for the AP Exam is $94.00 this year. • College faculty and experienced, trained AP teachers score AP exams during the summer. Remember: Students do not have to take an AP exam to complete the AP class for high school credit.
What is the difference between credit and placement? • Some colleges and universities award college credit for qualifying AP Exam scores. • Other colleges and universities award advanced placement. This means a student can skip introductory courses, enter higher-level classes, or earn placement in Honors courses based on qualifying AP scores. • Check with specific colleges to learn what credits/placements they offer and what AP Exam scores they require.
What can I do with college credit or placement? • Increase Options • College credit or placement allows you to move into upper-level courses sooner or to graduate earlier. • Save Money • Students who earn qualifying scores on an AP Exam may receive credit for the equivalent course at thousands of colleges and universities. • For example, many Kansas colleges award credit for the required freshman writing course to students who score a 4 or 5 on an AP English exam.
Can I earn college credit or placement just by taking the AP course? No. Colleges and universities give credit or placement only for qualifying AP Exam scores, not AP course grades. For some AP courses at South High, a dual credit option is available. More on that later.
How can I know the value of AP Exam grades at the colleges that interest me? • It’s always best to check directly with the college or university office of admissions or registrar. • Many colleges and universities publish this information on their web sites. Search the site for “Advanced Placement Credit.” • Try the College Board’s new AP Credit Policy Search www.collegeboard.com.

Why should I take the AP Courses/Exam if I’m not looking to earn credit or placement? • Stand out in the admissions process. • Earn academic scholarships or awards. • Experience a college-level test, one more similar to a comprehensive semester final exam. • Corresponding college courses will be easier. • Students who take AP courses are much more likely than their peers to graduate from college in 4 years.
Concurrent/Blended Credit Admissions Requirements • 3.0 cumulative High School GPA • Meet the post-secondary institution’s (college or university’s) admissions requirements • In some cases this means a minimum ACT subject test score, ACT Aspire subject test score, KS State Assessment subject test score or Accuplacer test score
Post-Secondary Opportunities • Concurrent Credit • Blended Credit • Dual Credit See your counselor if interested in post-secondary credit opportunities.
Enrolling for College Credit • Enrollment for college credit is done through the university or college offering the college credit. • The student is responsible for enrollment paperwork and tuition/fees. • Prerequisite testing or test scores may apply. • College drop date policies apply.
A few final but important things about signing up for Advanced/AP Classes: • When you sign up for an Advanced/AP Class you must be willing to commit to the level of rigor of a college level course. • Once the school year has started, only an administrator can approve a drop from an Advanced/AP Class.
