  1. Chhattisgarh’s Innovation in Agriculture Narwa, Garuwa, Ghuruwa, & Badi Four Pillars of Transformation Department of Agriculture Development and Farmer Welfare and Bio-Technology Government of Chhattisgarh

  2. About Narwa, Garuwa, Ghuruwa, Badi (NGGB) Chhattisgarh has outlined the roadmap of rural transformation, by using indigenous knowledge and technology through water conservation, livestock management, encouragement of organic manure and backyard nutrition This project is aimed at bringing resource efficient growth in the villages making best use of resource available in the villages गढ़बो नवा छत्तीसगढ़ छत्तीसगढ़ की चार चिन्हारी एला बचाये में हीहे जीवन संगवारी नरवा गरुवा घुरवा बाड़ी

  5. About Narwa, Garuwa, Ghuruwa, Badi (NGGB)

  6. Need for NGGB intervention • To boost higher agriculture growth • Only 1/3rd of farmers practice double cropping because of; • Poor water availability (32% irrigated area) • Straying of unclaimed cattle into farms is leading to major losses • To promote optimum use of rain water through water management structures resulting in recharging the ground water table. This will also increase the irrigation potential • High rate of malnutrition and undernourishment among children and women • Indicators of health and nutrition among the tribal section (33% of population) is even more worrisome • To promote organic farming, as currently use of chemical fertilizers is increasing which is leading to deteriorating soil health • To improve cattle productivity

  7. Current characteristics that aid the NGGB intervention • 80% of population is engaged in agriculture based livelihood • Abundant availability of rainfall (1250mm), which can be captured to benefit farmers • States spend on agriculture and the sector’s contribution to State GDP is increasing. Agriculture budget Increased by 49% in 2019-20, to the tune of ₹ 21,000 Cr • Sector has been growing consistently every year since 2012-13 (21% in 2017-18) • As per APEDA, cultivated area under organic certification process in Chhattisgarh has increased by 10,824.36 hectare in last 5 years

  8. Overview of NGGB • Convergence of different departments like Agriculture, WRD, Forest, Panchayat & Rural Development, CREDA, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, etc • Committees at state and district level. Agriculture department is the nodal agency at state level • Collector heads the program at district level and is provided flexibility as per local conditions • No separate funding is provided. The program utilizes funds from different schemes like MGNREGA, PMKSY, Bio-gas schemes, CREDA, DMF • Focus is on farmers’ welfare

  9. Narwa • One Nala selected in each block initially for treatment from origin till the tail • Structures to be made to impound water based on GIS mapping • Rejuvenation of old structures too • Use of various schemes like MGNREGA, IWMP, MIT, etc • Focus on water conservation and increase in irrigated area as irrigation area is only 36% in Chhattisgarh • Aquifers will be recharged and ground water level will increase

  10. Gothan • CPT and fencing around 3 to 6 acres of land, identified on the basis of number of cattle • Water facilities through pond / solar pump • Dry fodder by contribution from villagers • Animal sheds and plants for shade • Facilities to be included at each Gothan - chalf cutter, travis and medicines for animals • Vermi-composting pits and beds will help in production of organic manure • Bio-gas plants for community • GothanSamiti of locals will take decisions regarding the functioning and management of Gothan • Local Charwaha will be utilized through various schemes • Plantation will be carried out all around the Gothan • Breed improvement through AI will result in increasing the Milk production

  11. Charagah • Green fodder will be grown to supplement dry fodder • Patch of 5 to 20 acres of land identified near the Gothan in each selected Gram Panchayat • Use of different schemes like MGNREGA for land-levelling and other schemes like DMF for solar pump and drip irrigation for irrigating it • Fast growing varieties like Napier, Barshin will be grown depending on the local conditions

  12. Ghuruwa • Organic manure production through vermi-compost and Nadep pits through various schemes like MGNREGA • Scientific upgradation of traditional Ghuruwas • Organic manure will be used in Badis • Bio-gas plants of capacities 2, 3, 4 Cu.Mtr through CREDA department

  13. Badi • To be developed in the backyard / badi of farmers alongside their houses • Dugwells through MGNREGA and solar pump to irrigate the Badi of a group of 4 to 5 farmers • Fast growing variety of vegetables and fruits • Compost pits for manures • Nutritious foods for households • Will reduce import of vegetables from outside

  14. NGGB Progress – selected panchayats 1941

  15. NGGB Progress – Gothan and Charagah • GOTHAN . • Selected Gram Panchayats – 1899 • Total area under Gothan development – 9983.37 Acres • 11.40 Lakh number of animals will use these facilities • Total Amount sanctioned for the activity: ₹ 33319.14 Lakhs • MGNREGA - ₹ 31973.63 (In Lakhs) • Other Schemes - ₹ 1345.51 (In Lakhs) • CHARAGAH . • Selected Gram Panchayats – 1853 • Green fodder farming total area – 14146.05 Ha. • 947439 number of animals (estimates) to be fed through the green fodder produced in 14146.05 Ha. • Total Amount sanctioned for the activity: ₹ 9196.35 Lakhs • MGNREGA - ₹ 8966.41 (In Lakhs) • Other Schemes - ₹ 229.94 (In Lakhs)

  16. Expected outcomes of NGGB • NGGB is an indigenous approach for revitalization of agriculture and local economy • It will help in bringing self sufficiency involving the local community and resource crunch in the rural areas • Dependence on chemical fertilizers will reduce, promoting use of organic manure, improve soil health and earn carbon credits for the state • It will help in organic agriculture production • It will increase irrigation potential and improve ground water level • It will also help in increasing the nutrition level of rural population through the Badi initiative • It will help in employment generation and also help to check the migration of labour • It will help in increasing the income generation of rural populace • It will increase the productivity of cattle
